Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson will soon have more in common than just a last name, as they're both up for roles in "Home of the Brave," a wartime drama set against the backdrop of the war in Iraq.
Written by first-time screenwriter Mark Friedman and directed by "Life as a House" helmer Irwin Winkler, the flick will follow three soldiers who return home from the conflict and find the readjustment difficult. Samuel L. Jackson has been cast as a middle-age doctor who is surprised to discover that his tour of duty at home is even more daunting than the one he just finished in the Middle East.
Jessica Biel, Christina Ricci and "7th Heaven" actor Brian Presley have also signed on to the independently financed film, which is expected to begin shooting in Morocco next month with a budget of $12 million. The production will also shoot in Spokane, Washington, and will then approach studios for a distribution deal.
50 Cent, who recently made his acting debut in the semi-autobiographical drama "Get Rich or Die Tryin' " (see "50 Says He's No 'Super Actor' And Tells Em He's Not A Sucker"), is in final negotiations to make "Brave" his first true attempt at playing a fully fictionalized character. The 30-year-old hip-hop superstar would be joining a rare attempt by Hollywood to address the war in Iraq, one that Winkler admits was a difficult sell.
Last year's military-themed flick "Jarhead," assumed by many to be commenting on the current conflict, was in fact set during the first Gulf War. "Home of the Brave" would be notable as the first military drama to address Iraq.
oh great.
Hopefully Bruce Willis's upcoming movie about Fallujah will do much better business than this drek.
Jackson was great in Rules of Engagement.
Must see flick for any Freeper.
I hate it and haven't even seen it.
There should be this disclaimer on every hollyweird war flick- "No actual military or prior service military members were used in the filming or consultation of this movie"
I often see people on other boards ask about the same question which boils down to "what's the big deal with movies showing soldiers in bad light? It's not like people don't know it's just a movie." Wrong. Many people out there have got their only exposure to military life from the movies. Some believe that even if the movie is only half true, it's an accurate representation of our military. They don't realize that outside of all of the film's actors wearing uniforms, any similarity with reality ends there.
I bet you will never read about the Bruce Willis movie at MTV.com, which lies when it reports, "'Home of the Brave' would be notable as the first military drama to address Iraq."
Actually, Cpt. Dale Dye has made his name to the point where he actually appears in movies by acting as consultant.
He's done a great number of military movies.
The actors may not have military service, but the big budget war movies, or the ones they want to have any sense of realism always hire people like Dye.
Blackhawk Down was well done.
I was under the impression that Samuel L Jackson leaned more right than left. I thought I had read that somewhere several years ago.
Maybe you have Danny Glover confused with Samuel Jackson?
Danny Glover is to the left of leftists. But I don't think Samuel L Jackson is leftist, but I could be wrong.
Let me start by saying it was a fluke that I saw this show ... I watched Jackson on The Actor's Studio.
He discussed the same story and left the entire time explaining it was his way of "getting the man" while he was at college in Atlanta. He also said the thefts were ignorant and born out of a desire not to work, a lesson he's since learned.
He is in H'wood now ... so you may be right?
enough said.
