VENEZUELA'S president has called on Tony Blair to return the Falkland Islands to Argentina, accusing the Prime Minister of being a "pawn" of Washington.
"We have to remember the Malvinas [the Argentine name for the islands]; how they were taken away from the Argentines. Mr Blair, return the Malvinas to Argentina," said president Hugo Chavez.
The socialist leader has long been the most vocal critic of US president George Bush, but Mr Blair was added to his list of "imperialists" after the Prime Minister said in parliament on Wednesday that if Mr Chavez wanted to be respected, he "should abide by the rules of the international community".
He responded: "Mr Tony Blair, you have no moral right to tell anyone to respect international laws, as you have shown no respect for them, aligning yourself with 'Mr Danger' [president Bush] and trampling on the people of Iraq. Do you think we still live in the times of the British Empire or colonialism?"
The Argentine president, Nestor Kirchner, has vowed that the islands will one day be part of Argentina, but has not aggressively pursued the issue since taking power in 2003.
A statement released by the Venezuelan presidential palace was more formal but equally critical of Britain, which it now lumped together with the US.
"Venezuela respects the rules of the international community: that is why it does not invade countries, it does not blockade countries, it does not sponsor torture, it does not protect international terrorists and it repudiates the existence of clandestine CIA jails in various European countries. Venezuela is not a genocidal country," it said.
interesting thought. now would be the correct time for argentina to try again, as britain is preoccupied elsewhere. dont misunderstand my position, im merely commenting on the strategy that could be employed, im not endorsing it.
Russia and China are behind this guy
Those whores of babylon would be behind hitler if Germany was sitting on huge oil fields. Wait a second, russia WAS behind hitler, until they got their a** attacked.
Stalin: "Hmmm, comrade. That little corporal deed something not goot. Tell americans we sorry."
Great stories. Thanks!
Hope our fingerprints are not on it.
Well, you have a point.
"LAS MALVINAS SON ARGENTINAS!"
Er... We kicked the living crap out of the Mau Mau in Kenya (though you're right about Rhodesia)
trifle hysterical aren't we, old fruit?
And yet another example from the "just give us a reason" department...
I'm sorry -- I don't understand?
<< I hate Chavez, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. >>
Hate away, you're on a right track, there. But on this subject Chavez ain't no stopped clock and is as wrong around the clock as he is on every other topic.
Britain has effectively owned its Faulklands since the mid 1500s, more than 250 years before there was an Argentine. And, not that there's any effective doubt about that, Britain has absolutely owned them since 1690, 126 years before the Spanish lost control to its colonialists of the place they then and now call the Argentine.
The johnny-come-lately Argentines have no more claim to Britain's Faulkland Islands than they have to its Isle of Wight.
Or to New York's Coney Island. Or California's Catalina.
<< The UK and USA have the closest, strongest relationship of any two nations on this planet. >>
Nope.
Australia and the United States are much closer and Israel is a way better and more reliable ally than Britain.
And, insofar as anti-terrorism is concerned our government has an even closer relationship with that of France than with terrorist-appeasing and harboring Britain.
The indigenous people of the Falklands are those of British descent who colonized them in the 19th century. They were the first people there. The Argentines got their butts whipped in 1982 and it would happen again if there was another war today. Fighting people whose tradition is liberty and individual freedom are very, very hard to defeat. My own response to Chavez is to tell him to turn over large parts of his own country to the original inhabitants, sort of a STFU.
Um, I don't think Venezuala can "take back" the Falklands.
Nope. Even Australian aircrew don't get to do exchange tours in the stealth world. UK aircrew have had pilots in the F-117 since the late 80's. The first RAF B-2 Spirit pilot is now flying them out of Whiteman AFB. Even the Israeli's don't get to do this!
A little training in equipment your Europeon Neo-Soviet's socialistic offshore satellite state couldn't buy the paint for won't do your tallyhoing girlyboys any harm and you are, with a little help [And transport] from your friends and since we liberated it, garrisoning essentially-friendly Basra -- but:
Where were all y'all during Vietnam?
And where were the Australians?
Through your Euro-peon Neo-Soviet masters and coutesy of the effectively anti-American for-a-time European foreign relations Commissioner, Christopher "Hong Kong" Patten you fund and/or subsidise the mid-east's almost every enemy of America, Israel and freedom while, at home, your state abjectly appeases and harbors terrorists of every persuasion. And has for decades.
AND your slaveringly Arabist foreign office and foreign service and state propaganda organ [BBC] are both anti-American in the extreme.
Bit of a hissy fit there Brian? LOL! Not just training, but combat capable. RAF pilot flew and led F-117s missions during Allied Force.
<< Bit of a hissy fit there Brian? >>
<};^)~<
Brian, Basra was liberated by UK forces. Were you under the impression that other Coaltion forces liberated it and handed it over to UK forces?
