In some form or fashion, I have known the players in what I am about to describe as a series of regrettable moments at the funeral of Coretta Scott King.
The one I know least, President George W. Bush, won both my sympathy and respect for gallantly enduring the slings and arrows pointed directly at him during what should have been a celebration of a great woman, but instead turned into a political rally

In light of this erudite and cogent post, I acquiesce to your mental and moral superiority.
Carry on.
So, what do you do when a good thread goes bad?

"I don't remember any potshots at Slick Willie during President Reagan's funeral. "
There was one potshot taken but it was, of course, towards President Bush by Ron Reagan. Amazing to me how little he is like his father and how much Michael is.
right on.
And this was a funeral. Why should he not attend because of the idiocy and inappropriate behavior of others.
HE belonged there. Jimmy Carter did not.
but I thought Martin Luther posted some theses or something on a church door somewhere.... You're right, gotta go back to class. My heritage, by the way, can be traced back to him, for whatever that may be worth to you. (not Jr. of course)
the ironic thing is...Bush didn't attend Rosa Parks funeral and he was given so much crap. And now he attends a civil rights icon's funeral and it's used as an opportunity to attack him. What utter hypocrisy...
It is certainly a tragic and unfortunate reality that many churches shirk their pastoral, Christian duties and instead resort to political pandering...and for what? The church is no place for political maneuvering just as much as the government is no place for church matters to be preached.
Welcome to FR!
I hope the next Republican President is a more tough minded individual than George W. Bush. The next GOP President should not even let the liberal media onto the White House grounds. He should also end the circus side shows where the President appears at banquets with left wing artists, actors, writers, scholars, etc. There is no need for President Bush to stand in a photo next to, say, Robert Redford or Oprah Winfrey.
Unless we have leadership that will ignore and cut off the iron triangle of media, academia, and entertainment from Federal funding and access to prestige, conservatism and traditional values will probably never get the upper hand. Enough self-sacrifice and self-effacing; it is time to treat the enemy within as we treat the enemy overseas.
Great post! Welcome to FR!
"Intended to be funny, I'm sure, yet.... not even close. :]
dead on, in my opinion, but you have to read a bit deeper than what appears to be the obvious...
well said. thanks for your contribution...
and welcome!!
If Bush hadn't attended, he would have been criticized for not doing so. This worked out for him best -- he came across as the classy person he really is, and the Democrats came across as the hateful racists that they really are. This funeral was nothing more than another Paul Wellstone memorial political rally, and it will have the same result -- public anger at the vulgar displays of hatred.
We're not likely EVER going to have another President who sticks his thumb in the eye of the leftist media as this President.
(btw, sounds like a touch of jealousy with the 'country club' line of attack? How about the fact that the President and his father are just decent, moral men and behaved the way we are ALL supposed to behave?)
If you mean making a point about low class behavior at the funeral (which there was, plenty) by demonstrating some of your own, you succeeded. :)
The only class act at King's funeral was President Bush.
hehe...........right on! right on!!
Both of them, actually. Bush, Sr. was very good at deflecting criticism with humor.
