For the first time in nearly 29 years, Barry Manilow tops The Billboard 200. "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties" bows at No. 1 with sales of 156,000 copies in the United States, giving the artist his best sales week since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991.
The Arista album features Manilow revisiting such evergreens as "Unchained Melody" and "Love is a Many Splendored Thing." The artist's lone prior chart-topper came in July 1977 with his double concert LP "Live." His last album, "Scores: Songs From Copacabana and Harmony" (Concord), peaked at No. 47......."

I would much prefer listening to Manilow instead of disgusting rap music.
156,000 ??? That's enough to put somebody at #1 ???
WTF!!!
Michael Jacksons latest release since his trial sold 150,000 and didn't even make the top 100.
Her name was lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star
Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 til 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?
At the copa (co!) copacabana (copacabana)
The hottest spot north of havana (here)
At the copa (co!) copacabana
Music and passion were always in fashion
At the copa.... they fell in love
His name was rico
He wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw lola dancing there
And when she finished,he called her over
But rico went a bit to far
Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot B
ut just who shot who?
At the copa... she lost her love
Her name is lola, she was a showgirl,
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now its a disco, but not for lola,
Still in dress she used to wear,
Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her tony
Now shes lost her mind
That's the difference between selling 150,000 in 1 week and over the course of a couple months. The Billboard chart is weekly.
I am not sure how the ratings work, but this was on Drudge and there is a delicious irony as someone as square and mellow as Manilow beating all the filth out there.
Barry was featured on the Martha Stewart show the other day. He looks old!
It's probably the songs and not Manilow that are the selling point. Lately I've begun to listen to and appreciate the non-rock songs that were popular in the 50s. Back then I thought they were dull, but they have actually held up well over time. Very listenable.
Lots of people like his music but won't admit it.

[ / just teasing ]
No flaming please. I love Barry's music!
That's only because he is.
I think it's sold so well due to this style of music coming back, plus the fact that people can order the CD without even having to get up to change their Depends.
You got it!! My son was at Barnes and Noble Christmas of '04 and he heard this great music of old. He asked at the counter who was singing and found out it was Rod Steward. His dad and I got the albumn,(The Great American Songbook) for a gift under the tree. I have been playing it almost everyday for two years! I love it. Now 2 weeks ago I was at B&N and heard these beautiful songs but I didn't know who was singing. I asked and it was Manilow. Yes, Texas I think you are right. It's thoes wonderful old songs.
You are bad!Just wait a while...this will come back to haunt you.:)
