Lahore, February 8: At least 3,000 protesters enraged by the alleged desecration of the Koran clashed with police and torched two cinemas in Pakistan's second largest city Lahore, police said on Wednesday.
The city, was tense after the mob rampaged through a poor neighbourhood overnight and also smashed up dozens of vehicles, local police officer Mohammad Abbas said.
The trouble erupted late on Tuesday when copies of the Muslim holy book were found lying in a drain in the Bhatta chowk area on the fringes of the sprawling city.
"The news of the desecration of the Koran spread quickly in the neighbourhood and within no time some three to four thousand people took to the streets shouting slogans against the desecration," Abbas said.
He said the crowd armed with bamboo sticks turned violent, setting fire to two cinema houses and attacking public and private properties.
"Police used a mild baton charge to restore order, but the situation is very tense," he said.
Abbas said police have registered a case against unknown people under the country's blasphemy laws.

OK, here's the plan. We give these people a nuke...but we make it so big that they can't move it...then we set it up for them in mecca with a big button. Any bets how long it'll take some bozo to push the button even though the nuke is stuck in place?
Wonder if I could get a taxpayer funded NEA grant to submerse a koran in a jar of urine and take a picture of it.
I've got to tell you, it is not often that an enemy like this comes down the historical pike.

Why is that a fantasy world. I propose a grassroots movement all over the U.S. of conservative americans buying up Korans, driving to know Muslim neighborhoods and throwing them in the gutters. Watch everyone freak out then!
I didn't see any global protests against the "not really true muslims because Islam is the religion of peace" terrorists who kill monthly in Israel, killed in Spain, killed in England, killed Van Gogh in the streets, killed in Bali, killed in Beslan, or killed in the USA.
Seems to me that the terrorists defame Islam but I never see muslim protest against it. Why is that?
If I, not a muslim, do something to offend them, I will be protested even though I don't worship their god. If someone who CLAIMS to be following the same god does something bad, they say "well they aren't really following Islam".
And why don't faithful muslims report clerics and mosques to the authorities when they are training and sponsoring jihadist terrorism? I certainly would report my Christian church if it was engaging in clinic bombings and I learned of it.
The answer is because it is forbidden for a mulsim to question the faith of another muslim (even a "not really a muslim because Islam means peace" terrorist).
