Well, so much for the fat-police. Of course they try to spin it, but an 8 year study of 48,835 women, sounds pretty thourough.

I think it's back to the old adage: "everything in moderation".

Including moderation?

My theory is that fat helps eliminate fat-soluble toxins. For which I have no evidence.

Does this mean we don't have to live on rice, soy and tree bark?

I prefer the Heinlein saying, "Everything to excess. To enjoy the flavour of life take big bites. Moderation is for monks.".

"The results, of course, are somewhat disappointing."

Does this not indicate that the researcher began the test with a desired outcome? I thought science was supposed to be objective.

Notice how they threw in "heart disease" at the end of the list. It should be the headline since the food-Nazi's have been down on fat primarily because of the effect it allegedly had on the heart.

Bias is not only in the media.

I don't mean to jump on what you said..BUT (famous last words)..the whole moderation thing bugs the heck out of me!!!!! Sorry...

I've been reading some pretty interesting books and articles that claim that the anti-fat hysteria that took hold in the late 1950's and climaxed in the 80's-mid 90's was based on crap. Fat is not the enemy-processed TRANSfats and processed foods, sugar, simple carbs, whatever, seem to do a helluva lot more to you than the stuff our ancestors ate. I might be flamed for this but the low carb people do seem to have some good points. Hey it worked for me...and what that means is good, real non-"diet" foods.. Oh God, I hope I did not start the low carb is the best vs the Low Carb will kill ya arguement!

KILLER BBQ BEEF RIBS TEXAS STYLE:

Make a spice rub:
4 tsp chili powder
1 tsp cayenne pepper
2 tsp salt
1.5 tsp black pepper

Rub spice thoroughly on room-temp ribs one hour before grilling.

Grill indirect method, push all coals to one side, meat side down for first hour.

Wrap soaked wood chips in alum. foil envelope, pierce w/fork, place directly on coals.

Get 2 shallow cans (like tuna fish) fill with hot water and place on grill over hot coals.

Close bottom vent completely, place top vent over meat (to draw smoke over meat) and close almost completely. You want the ribs to cook slow as possible, low temp. Flip meat after 1 hour. When meat starts to pull away from bone - they are done.

DO NOT put sauce on the ribs. Put the sauce on the plate as a dipping sauce. My favorite, Bullseye Spicy.

Buying ribs: go to a supermarket that has a butcher, never get the ones that were frozen, they trim out too much of the good meat.

Enjoy your cholesterol!!!

I bet if they ran a similar study testing sugar, they would find a definite connection with declining health and people consuming tons of sugar/

Fat is not the universal scourge it is made out to be. EVERY diet needs an absolute minimum of certain combinations of fat.

Trans-fats, created by the hydrogenation of unsaturated oils, does not normally exist in nature, and is utilized only poorly by the body. Certain other triglycerides, as found in butter, consist of relatively short-chain esters, including propionic, butyric, capric and capriolic radicals, and are burned readily as energy sources by the body, while the long-chain radicals are burned much more slowly, and have a tendency to remain in storage until forced into the bloodstream by extreme starvation or extreme exercise routines. Literally, you have to be sweating Crisco to get rid of these long-chain radicals. You also risk developing a condition called "ketosis" when your body begins utilizing these long-chain radicals.

Well, so much for the fat-police.

Not so fast. Studies came out vindicating second-hand smoke, too, but they came at smokers harder than ever. And now that the last blood has been stopmed out of that cash cow, the overweight are next.

An interesting article was posted recently:

Mutation found that cures heart disease

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1562542/posts

In 1980, a man from a small town called Limone Sul Garda in northern Italy went to a doctor for some problem, not heart related.

Testing of his blood showed very high levels of triglycerides, and very low levels of HDL, the good form of cholesterol. By all rights, the man should have either been dead from, or in imminent danger of a heart attack.

But his arteries were clear.
Analysis of his blood showed he had a very special form of Lipoprotein, a type of HDL. And further work with this particular type of Lipoprotein revealed astounding results.

In some of the initial small scale tests of this form of HDL, volunteers were given one shot a week of it, for a trial that lasted five weeks.

Measurements of the blockage in their arteries showed that total blockage was reduced by 4% in five weeks. While this may not sound like much, to a cardiologist, it's equivalent to taking years off of your cardiac age.

Further testing and analysis with animals show fantastic results. While standard HDL's are desirable, this substance has been shown to for all intents and purposes, to completely reverse heart disease.
