LITHONIA, Ga. - Shivering in near-freezing temperatures, thousands of people waited hours in line Tuesday for one last chance to say goodbye to Coretta Scott King before her funeral.
"There's one word to describe going to go see Coretta historic. It's good to finally see her at peace," said Robert Jackson, a 34-year-old financial consultant from Atlanta whose 10-year-old daughter, Ebony, persuaded him to take her to the visitation.
The lines had already started forming by 3 a.m. By the time the doors opened at 6:30 a.m., people toward the end were warned that if they stayed in line they likely wouldn't get into the funeral because of long lines that were already forming there.
An estimated 10,000 people, including four U.S. presidents, were expected to attend the midday funeral at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where King's daughter Bernice is a minister.
That's the beauty of it. The Wellstone debacle cemented public opinion firmly against the democrats. Apparrently they mistook that as a formula for success.
Save your brain, give up Savage.
Only one thing, maybe, but at least something.
.
It was awful.
It still is.
I couldn't have said it any better-you nailed that one!!
It's not a funeral, it's a rant, a screed, a diatribe and a jeremiad.
I'll be so glad when the 60's are finally over.
"but if that is all you know....you should never have started this thread....I'm assuming you have been skewered...."
Actually, no. No one has "skewered" me until you. Why are you slamming me so? The impetus for this thread was an AP article.
"Are there any happy and satisfied "African American's in this country?"
Yes. There are plenty. They just don't get much air time.
"I don't have a problem with the President attending the funeral, but I do have a question. Did anyone notice before the funeral that the announcer asked the crowd to bow their heads in a moment of silence for Coretta King and Rosa Park? I could understand Parks b/c she lived in Detroit but why King other than that she just died. Did anyone find this odd? Or am I just a racist. My first thought was didn't other people of note die between last year's bowl and this one."
Friend,
I recall the announcement before the super bowl. Mrs. King was mentioned, I thought, because she had just died. Rosa Parks, I guess, was mentioned because she lived in Detroit.
"Or am I just a racist."
Friend, whether you are racist or not is a question that only you and God can answer. However, I would guess that you are not since you felt the need to ask! Peace. Kate
I know I'm not a racist. It was sarcasm. I was just trying to see if anyone else had a thought about this. Friend, 1/2Cajun
I've never visited a white supremicist website in my life. Don't know on any. I was speaking of his teaching on socialism, which some equate with communism.
Yes, there is a difference. A Federal holiday closes all Federal offices, only. A national holiday closes all government offices (such as states) and banks. A national holiday is more likely to be observed by a private company. For example, at my company, I get MLK day off, but I don't get Columbus day.
I never knew that. Thanks!
"Don't know on any" should have read "don't know of any".
When I suggested reading MLK, I meant his wrintings direct, not the writings someone else wrote about his writings. No one should be afraid of that.
I meant for this to go to you.
