LITHONIA, Ga. - Shivering in near-freezing temperatures, thousands of people waited hours in line Tuesday for one last chance to say goodbye to Coretta Scott King before her funeral.
"There's one word to describe going to go see Coretta historic. It's good to finally see her at peace," said Robert Jackson, a 34-year-old financial consultant from Atlanta whose 10-year-old daughter, Ebony, persuaded him to take her to the visitation.
The lines had already started forming by 3 a.m. By the time the doors opened at 6:30 a.m., people toward the end were warned that if they stayed in line they likely wouldn't get into the funeral because of long lines that were already forming there.
An estimated 10,000 people, including four U.S. presidents, were expected to attend the midday funeral at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where King's daughter Bernice is a minister.
Who cares?
She's an American. Black or White, she had quite an influence on events immediately following her husband's death.
This isn't supposed to be about race but sadly some on this forum and in the MSM only see in terms of race.
No idea, unless a) he was coming from Houston, so it didn't make sense, or b) the two presidents don't fly together for family reasons. Don't really know.
Not only race, but politics - she mighta been a "liberal!"
To me it is showing respect..
A Los Angeles Times article reported that there are liberal blacks who aren't thrilled with the choice of venue.
politics don't matter in death.
She is answering on a higher level now.
me too...
at least we haven't had the idiot racist jackasses come into this thread and claim that MLK was a communist....
IIRC the correct protocol is:
Sitting President: The President
Former President: President Jones
Form of address for either: Mr. President
First Lady, current or former: Mrs. Jones
Form of address for either: Mrs. Jones
I'm sure she did not accomplish nearly as much during her life as you have; you could try to be gracious from your undoubtedly superior position. :)
does Jimmy count?
I'm looking forward to watching this historic event on screen in Living Color and in Widescream Panderama!
Huh? In all fairness, Mike...what do you think her tributes today are going to be all about?

I bet I got at least one right. Grade mine first! I love Pop Quizes!
Not in the City, but close. What most folks call 'Atlanta' includes several different county and municipal governments and several distinct school systems. Nowhere near all of them are closed today. The only 'logic' for our system closing is that it is the same county where the service is being held - some 30 or so miles away from my daughter's school.
I don't have a problem with the President attending the funeral, but I do have a question. Did anyone notice before the funeral that the announcer asked the crowd to bow their heads in a moment of silence for Coretta King and Rosa Park? I could understand Parks b/c she lived in Detroit but why King other than that she just died. Did anyone find this odd? Or am I just a racist. My first thought was didn't other people of note die between last year's bowl and this one.

Sorry, your score is 29%...see you in study hall!
4 President's.
And only one is really worth a d*mn. (And even he is blowing the US spending to high-holy heaven.)
As opposed to getting blown to high-unholy hell.

But I guess that means I don't see this as a black - white
thing either. If you accept the given that Dr. and therefore
Mrs. King helped black people then in the same way and
for the same reasons she also helped white people
If I hold no hate or disdain in my heart I am better for it.
