Pres. Bush To Attend Mrs. King's Funeral
WSBTV ^ | February 4, 2006

President and Mrs. Bush will attend Coretta Scott King's funeral on Tuesday, the White House announced Saturday.

Former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton will also attend the service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, where Mrs. King's daughter Bernice ministers.

More than 25,000 mourners braved cold, wet weather Saturday to pay respects to Mrs. King as her casket lay in honor at the State Capitol.

She was the first woman and the first African-American to lie in honor at the statehouse.

A horse-drawn hearse brought her bronze casket to the Capitol, and bagpipes played "Amazing Grace" as an honor guard from the Georgia State Patrol carried it inside.

Mourners spent an average of two hours in line to spend a brief moment of silence in front of the casket.

"We want to just give our last respects to a wonderful woman who has done so much for Atlanta, and the world," Gladys Simmons said.

"This is just a way of saying thank you," Ronald Moore said, "and thanking her for the sacrifices she made for people like me that she didn't know. It's the least we could do."

Gov. Sonny Perdue and his wife Mary escorted the casket into the statehouse, a sharp contrast to the official snub afforded Martin Luther King Jr. nearly four decades ago by segregationist Gov. Lester Maddox.

"Coretta Scott King was a gracious and courageous woman, an inspiration to millions and one of the most influential civil rights leaders of our time," Perdue said during a brief ceremony. "She was absolutely an anchor and support for her husband."

King's four children -- Yolanda, Dexter, Martin Luther King III and Bernice -- spent a few minutes at the open casket before the doors were thrown open to the public. Yolanda King stroked her mother's face, and she and her sister Bernice wiped away tears.

Any chance you can type, versus posting pictures? Are you making some sort of racist comments, or what?

Seriously. I don't get your point of showing her with President Bush & President Reagan. Is it the LACK of pictures of her with Clinton that's your point?

Or were you just accidentally posting to me?

WAIT I THOUGHT ALL REPUBLICANS WERE RACIST AND WANTED TO PUT ALL BLACK PEOPLE IN CHAINS ON THE PLANTATION, WHILE FLYING THE CONFEDRATE FLAG AND SING DIXIE....We need to have a Congressional Investigation lead by John Conyers into why Bush is going against the image portrayed by liberal Democrats and Black Leaders in what Republicans are!!!!

Other than the imaginary typing where you got the idea I was being racist, you mean? You obviously know nothing about me.

I'm not the one to say that to... trust me.

The point is... this is a reminder. When the dems decide to showboat like they did for 8 hours at Rosa Parks funeral, we know this is the same party that lies every year and get voted for because blacks have no idea of the history of the end of slavery, how voter's rights came to be and who pushed so hard against this.

I am a daughter of the south who now lives in the Northeast. I stumped in black churches from Brooklyn, New Jersey and Philadelphia in the run-up to the convention... every weekend for months. You're talking to the wrong one. Just the fact of you gleaning racism from the pictures (check the title), shows something is amiss with you.

I don't know if she is a Republican, but on several occasions, I seem to have seen her on the Catholic channel promoting Pro-Life causes.
I'm not positive though, because I only remember the name of Martin King being used each time. It could have been a niece instead of his daughter. Someone else might be able to confirm whether the woman I saw several times is a niece or his daughter. The show has hosted by a Father Pavone.

Bernice (Rev.), was the one on with Fr. Frank. She's pro-life for sure.

A lot of the 'black' stations for her conservative values and gay rights activists got mad at her with she led a march in Atlanta for marriage amendment (between a man and a woman)

Let's see, Coretta King is the first black and first woman to lie in state in the Georgia capitol. Gov. Sonny Perdue is a Republican, though. How can that be? I guess Republicans have changed from when they held the governorship in 1968, when MLK was killed. What? Lester Maddox, a democrat, was govenor then? Hmmm.

But at least Jimmy Carter made MLK a national holiday...What? No, you say? Why it was that nasty Republican Ronald Reagan who did that...

The media will go CRAZY with this....
(crickets....)

Like Hillary, she stuck through many known adulterous affairs during her marriage so she could be a famous Mrs. somebody.
Her husband did some great things, but all I can remember is she just kept trying to profit from his name.

Thanks. Then she is his daughter, not his niece. I wasn't sure about her. I never saw an entire segment, just short glimpses and didn't know she was a reverend either.

You know, we are men of different colors and there is a real danger facing both of us. It's the lack of real history being taught in school to young people with real un-screwed up facts as they happened in a period of time. I really could graduate from college today with a BS degree with what I learned in my HS. Coming generations are being dumbed down. I thank God I joined the AF for 6 yrs and learned the technical things 14 hrs/day as if I was blindfolded. Those are the only real schools left that have any discipline attached.

And I HOPE this srevice doesn't become political....

Sorry...no hope of that. Probably will be like Rosa's funeral, to a higher degree (of DNC influence). I wonder at what part of the service the President will speak. If early, will they leave right away?
