Anger over cartoons spreads in Europe

Anger over cartoons spreads in Europe AP

Gaza City: Rage against caricatures of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) poured out across the Muslim world on Saturday, with aggrieved believers calling for the execution of those involved, storming European buildings, and setting European flags afire.

The cartoons, first printed in Denmark, and then published elsewhere in Europe, have touched a raw nerve, in part because Islamic law is interpreted to forbid any depictions of the Prophet.

Muslims in Europe have reacted less passionately than their counterparts in the Mideast and Southeast Asia, but on Saturday, anger in Europe swelled, too, with demonstrators clashing with police in Copenhagen and gathering outside the Danish Embassy in London.

A South African court, meanwhile, barred newspapers from reprinting the pictures

In Munich, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she understood Muslims' hurt, but denounced violent reactions.

"I can understand that religious feelings of Muslims have been injured and violated," Merkel said at an international security conference, " but I also have to make clear that I feel it is unacceptable to see this as legitimising use of violence."

A leader of the Hamas group, which recently swept Palestinian parliamentary elections, told an Italian newspaper yesterday that the cartoons were an "unforgivable insult" that should be punished by death.

"We should have killed all those who offend the Prophet and instead here we are, protesting peacefully," Mahmoud Zahar, a top leader of the militant group that won the Jan. 25 Palestinian elections, told Italian daily Il Giornale.

"We should have killed them, we should have required just punishment for those who respect neither religion nor its holiest symbols," Zahar was quoted as saying.

Hundreds of Palestinians turned out for protests yesterday. In Gaza City, demonstrators hurled stones at a European Commission building and stormed a German government cultural centre, smashing windows and doors.

Protesters also burned German and Danish flags, and called for a boycott of Danish products. In the West Bank town of Hebron, about 50 Palestinians marched to the headquarters of the international observer mission, burned a Danish flag, and demanded a boycott.

At least 500 Israeli Arabs gathered peacefully in Nazareth for the first protest against the caricatures on Israeli soil.

Angry demonstrators took to the streets in Denmark and Britain yesterday, a sign that European Muslims' emotions have heated up.

Poland's prime minister, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, criticised a Polish newspaper for reprinting the images.

In Copenhagen, young Muslims clashed with police after they were stopped from boarding a train to go to a demonstration north of the Danish capital.

Tell me again Unca Georgie, about the religion of peace. I so love your fairytale stories.....

I did the same thing. Lots of DUers are big supporters of a strict interpretation of the First Amendment, which I don't find too surprising. They want the right to say whatever they think without censorship from what they consider the evil Bush administration. Nevertheless, I give credit where credit is due.

I even saw a few posts suggesting that Muslims who cannot tolerate free speech relocate to countries more hospitable to their views. Those posts were a real shock.

A long time ago I tried to grow a beard. It was possible. But it itched and I scratched it while looking like an unpresentable bum with nice clothes! It's long gone. I wonder if the lice these muslims have does the scratching for them?

If we burn these guys' beards off with a Bic lighter we could solve two problems at the same time. And possibly 3 or 4.

Europe is so far gone down the road to being overrun by this sort of thing that only one apporach will work; (1) quickly pass laws allowing the immediate deporation to the country of origin of ANY individual, naturalized citizen or not, who is involved in these protests; (2) withdraw diplomatic personnel and close embassies in any country that does not guarantee and take steps to enforce the safety of diplomatic personnel; (3) immediately halt any and all immigration AND tourist visas from said countries. The smart countries will do this quickly, the stupid ones will wait until it gets a lot worse. The fun part here will be watching our own Euro loving lefties react to the actions and blather on about how the US is forcing these countries to take these actions.

It is the only workable solution. I hope that you were not kidding as far too many are about that solution.

The same DUers you commend who want the right to say whatever they want about President Bush also will be the first to deny others the right of free speech when they disagree (PC).

They are not defenders of free speech, but hypocrites.

Europe is going to need a stiffer backbone.

I haven't seen the pictures on Fox News, or in the NY Post, Washington Times or any other non-Progressive American media outlet.

Looks like America could use some more backbone, too.

This shows the broad scope and depth to which Islamists have taken over in the consciousness of Muslims in Europe and previously "moderate" secular states like Jordan.
Angela Merkel's comparison with the rise of Nazism is on the money.

PUBH stands for poop be upon him ... right?

I prefer MHEBDIHBS (May he be buggered daily in Hell by Satan).

I regret that some might find that statement offensive.

I beg to disagree with your comment if you intend it as a blanket statement. I've known plenty of liberals who have more of a libertarian cast to their views, and they view the First Amendment as almost sacred.

They would defend your right to vehemently excoriate Ted Kennedy, the ACLU and FDR. Seriously. But they would be the first out there demonstrating against you and writing letters to the editor.

I'm sorry that you haven't met any of them. They make good debate partners.

"...as our President has said, it is the religion of peace..."

It is a peaceful religion; before things get blown up. Then it becomes a peaceful religion again. Bush doesn't think that way. He has the codes to order strikes. And Iran isn't going to leave where it exists. There is a big price to be paid for what happened in Manhattan that has not been paid for yet. Iran should make sure the US is not harmed.

Fine with me.

The Muslims are all just simply nuts and insane. And that's besides being backwards, cruel, stupid and barbaric. Not to mention hateful and insane and no fun at all.

Why are there any Muslims at all anywhere in the world except in their own pig toilets of countries? If Islam is so great why do they have to go more 100 miles from Mecca?

The world would be a better place if we simply nuked them all off the face of the planet. The Muslims can't and don't want to co-exist with anyone else on the planet except their own stinking kind.

Drawing a picture....BAD.. punishment DEATH.
Burning flag...good.. rewarded in Heaven.
These are Islamists who have no respect for freedom of speech but believe death threats are protected speech.
When they declared FATWAH on Salman Rushdie for writing a novel, the US, Jimmy Carter and the VBrots did nothing. That was the time to act before the flames of hate spread everywhere.
We will pay the price of the neglect and "tolerance" of vile hate and censorship by Carter and the Clintons.
