From What the Cartoons Were About:
The drawings were commissioned by the Jyllands-Posten (Jutland's Post) to accompany an article on self-censorship and freedom of speech after Danish writer Kare Bluitgen was unable failed to find artists willing to illustrate his children's book about Mohammed for fear of violent attacks by extremist Muslims.Islamic teachings forbid pictorial depictions of Mohammed.
The cartoons were published on September 30 with an explanatory article by the newspaper's culture editor, Flemming Rose.
The following is a translated summary of the article and explanation of the cartoons published in the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia.
"The modern, secular society is rejected by some Muslims. They demand a special position, insisting on special consideration of their own religious feelings.
"It is incompatible with contemporary democracy and freedom of speech, where you must be ready to put up with insults, mockery and ridicule.
"It is certainly not always equally attractive and nice to look at, and it does not mean that religious feelings should be made fun of at any price, but that is less important in this context. [...] we are on our way to a slippery slope where no one can tell how the self-censorship will end.
"That is why the Jyllands-Posten has invited members of the Danish editorial cartoonists union to draw Mohammed as they see him."
Forty artists were invited to give their interpretation on of how Mohammed may have looked. Twelve responded.

The Ottoman studio not only dealt with the splendors of everyday life and glories of the blood and State, self-satisfiedly accepting their position as the pivot on which the destinies of Europe and Asia turned, but with Koran illuminations, prayer books, mystical works and poems, history, law, theology, education and mosques as well. The works of Nakkas Osman and other Siyer-i Nebi illustrations are presented here.

Rush had some raghead on today and after listening to the guy blather on, Rush began noting the Islamic outrage about the cartoons then began citing all the atrocities committed by Islamists, recounting them one by one (long list) and the islamic outrage which followed, i.e., zero, zilch, nada.
The guy quieted down a lot then tried to get up a second head of steam, Rush recapped and ditched the Islam apologist.

Actually, all this got started when a seventh century guy with delusions of grandeur started telling thugs that if they robbed and killed for him they could keep part of the booty and some of the women. When they complained they might be killed by those trying to protect their property and their lives he came up with the promise that they'd be compensated by Allah (Mohammad's ethereal alter ego) by getting to hang out in an eternal brothel filled with nonstop partying with beautiful virgins.
THAT'S how it REALLY all got started.
If cartoons can get all the jihadists out in the streets then I say by all means draw some more. I've heard plenty of calls for muslim to denounce muslim violence but where are the left in denouncing the muslim violence? Could you imagine Christians getting away with such behavior?
Just like the world appeased the Nazi movement, we managed to appeased the musi movement too long.
A stand needs to be taken. The longer we wait, the more tragic it will become.
I'm amazed it has gotten this far and still without the planet saying "ENOUGH". Could any of us imagine 60 years ago a Hitler cartoon would have our State Department running for cover? We are witnessing pathetic.
The guy who said that if we didn't learn from our history, we will be doomed to repeat it really knew what he was talking about.

I've posted this before but it's worth posting again. Also enlightening to say the least.

Islam is a dreadful religion born out of resentment for the chosen Jewish people by a 2-bit, mentally deranged thug named Mohammed with a serious inferiority complex. From a consistency standpoint it does not deserve to be considered in the same league as Christianity or Judaism. In their hearts, Muslims know this and get more defensive when their icon is challenged. Kinda like when liberals like Howard Dean, Teddy Kennedy, and Cindy Sheehan explode at Bush and conservatives. They can't argue for the truth because they don't have it and that drives them looney.
Who cares how it got started? The really funny and significant thing is it took four months for the "RAGE" to build. I guess it took that long to get all the Dutch flags they needed to burn, etc. to express this spontaneous rage.
Keep this in mind. A large percentage of the people in the muslim "world" are illiterate, and therefore easily led by the same people who would be televangelists, at the very most, here in the West.
A "religion" that panders to man's baser desires is NO religion. I refuse to call Islam one; It is a CULT.
We have already taken that stand. Ask any of the Rangers in Afghanistan, or the SEALs in Iraq, or Marines in Fallujah. We are taking the fight to them. And then some.
So yes, we ARE taking a stand. Show some gratitude to our troops.

In this case, the term "religion" has been bestowed simply in response to numbers.
If it were just a handful of kooks it would be referred to as a "cult", but since it's hundreds of millions of mindlessly manipulated people, many in positions of wealth and influence, it's called a "religion".
You're right though, in reality a cult is a cult is a cult...and a cult that of personal imprisonment through the surrendering of the will and DEATH is the very worst kind.
