Ethnic Affairs Minister Chris Carter has warned that the decision by two newspapers to publish cartoons depicting the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, undermines New Zealand's reputation as a tolerant country.
The Dominion Post and the Christchurch Press re-published the caricatures, originally printed by a Danish newspaper, one of which pictures Mohammed with a bomb in his turban.
The cartoons have caused outrage across the Islamic world and Chris Carter says they could affect trade, New Zealand's troops in Afghanistan and even the situation of the Auckland student currently held hostage in Iraq.
He says publishing them was a disappointing decision.
The Maori Party says it is disgusted at the decision to print the cartoons.
Party co-leader Tariana Turia says the act will not only incense the feelings of the Muslim community but is also an outrageous attack on any efforts to create unity throughout Aotearoa.

Many "moderates"/centrists and leftists, and even conservatives, sound lofty when they talk about "justice", "clean, green, nuclear-free New Zealand", and "free trade" but when they look at trade dollar signs they have forgotten everything about principles and personal dignity.

The Toronto "Globe and Mail" has a report on the publishing of the cartoons. One clown responding to the article suggested that the publishing of the cartoons was the work of the right wing press and that the governments of Europe should clamp down on Christian extremists. I wonder where all these Christian extremists are with bombs strapped to their waists?
It is time to tell tehse Canadian leftists to visit sites hosted by their mates in the US such as Democratic Underground. Even the DUmmies are calling to support these newspapers who published the cartoons!

The Kiwis surrendered to the Left Extreme a long time ago. They have become spineless weenies. NZ has the world's worst case of P-Envy. They hate the Aussies, they hate the USA, they don't much like the British, but they love the Chicoms. Their newspapers are censored to only print the Government line. They are sliding into irrelevance very quickly, and have no REAL friends.
Whether it's the US State Dept. or NZ MPs, I don't see what business it is of any gov't telling newspapers what to print or not to print, regardless of whether the cartoons are offensive. And none of these official bodies have ever complained so far as I know about the constant insults to Christianity offered all the time, e.g., "Piss Christ," Offili's Madonna with elephant dung, "Corpus Christi" etc.
