There are two simultaneous international uproars over the satiric cartoons that appeared in September in a small Danish newspaper, and they reflect the Wall between Western and Islamic values.
In most of the West, there is reaction to the strong-arm tactics mounted by the Arab states against Denmark, and Muslim demands that the Western press be censored in line with Arab sensitivities. In Muslim countries, there is state inciting of outrage that Mohammed is dissed by cartoons.
The Washington Posts Jefferson Morley describes the two differing views:
"Islam forbids any representation of the Prophet," the paper's [France Soir, before its Egyptian owner fired its editor] front page editorial says today. "The question is, are all those who are not Muslims obliged to honour that prohibition? Can you imagine a society that added up all the prohibitions of the different religions? What would remain of the freedom to think, to speak, or even to come and go freely?"
Versus
A government official in the United Arab Emirates offered a very different definition of freedom of expression to the Khaleej Times. "Freedom of expression means freedom to express one's views in ways that will not affect social harmony," he said.
That social harmony is epitomized by despots persecuting their peoples, supporting each others armed threats to the West and by terrorists, by anti-Semitic cartoons resonant of the Nazis, by oppression and murder of Christians, by fatwahs for the murder of dissidents and Westerners.....[more]
Today, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the militant Lebanese political group Hizbollah, made this statement about the Danish cartoon scandal: "If there had been a Muslim to carry out Imam Khomeini's fatwa against the renegade Salman Rushdie, this rabble who insult our Prophet Mohammed in Denmark, Norway and France would not have dared to do so."
Well, f**k you Mr. Nasrallah, but we would dare all the more. At least, so I hope. Mr. Van Gogh's death did not dissuade us. But thank you for pointing out what we are fighting here. It isn't the offensive nature of the cartoons. I get that. It is our daring to criticize you in any way that you react to with such venom and violence. Indeed, at one of the many protests against the cartoons today, a priest at the al-Omari mosque said "We will accept nothing less than the severing of the heads of those responsible."
Oh yes you will. And we will see to that.
BRAVO! Well said.
Somewhere in the old testement Moses displays his miracles and the priests' of Egypt produce the same magic to convince Pharaoh that Moses is a fake. Finally, the test is to bring the 7 plagues on Egypt because Pharaoh won't believe Moses.
I wish we could have a showdown like this today. To me it seems that we're going to have a 200 year war before we turn "The Religion Of Peace" around. It will take the equivalent of 7 plagues.
I thnk it would be more fun to be alive and be a disruptor with catoons IED's and WMD's
Be my guest.
Can't we all get along?
In a word, no.
Bashing Christians is a popular passtime in the United States because the left KNOWS Jerry Falwell isn't going to strap dynamite to himself and blow himself up in the Washington Post newsroom. Your comparison is silly. The "theocrats" most significant actions have been to try and keep child pornography illegal and allow prayer in schools. Get back to me when James Dobson recommends honor killings if you find out your sister went out without her head scarf, or when you hear of Catholic Priests shoving schoolgirls back into a burning building because they ran out without their burkas.
I can only imagine that the Islamic world has its own version of talk radio and that Mullah Al-Hannity is citing these cartoons an attack on traditional values and evidence of the crusader west's "War on Mohammed".
'I think these people need a new hobby.'
being a victim is a full-tiime avocation
They can demonize the Jews and Christians in their news media but blow a gasket when its thrown back at them.
That gives me an idea. I think I'll go draw a cartoon of Mohammad blowing a gasket. I wonder how long it will take for my death fatwa to be issued.
Print your pictures, but then don't expect us to come mop up your messes. That's what I say. Everybody in FR got so upset with the State Department today because they issued a diplomatic statement and didn't immediately declare war on all European Muslims. I say: forget about it!
Let the euroweenies handle their own problems. Let's see if they have what it takes to take on a real fight.
They've been doing nothing but carping and whining and moaning and complaining about the "cowboy George Bush". Well, now they've got a bunch of crazy, low-IQ, Exited Delirium Syndrome zombies armed and whacko'd against them. Let's see them do better!
We in America should sit back and eat pop corn. And support our troops in Iraq. Where the real battle line is being drawn.
By the way, for those of you so heavily po'd about the State Dept today. I have a question for you: do you really want to put our soldiers in Iraq in more harms way, and do you really want to blow our fragile relationship with our new Iraqi allies, all to come to the defense of the arrogant ingrates of Europe.
I say: forget about it!
Non-believers are to be treated worse than animals, as they are considered evil. The arguments of non-believers are not to be heeded, after all, why should they listen to a follower of the devil).
This is what we're up against, get used to the idea, because they are not going away.
This is really taking "getting dissed" to the next level.
..and those that support hate crime legislation.
I see this ending in a few different ways
A: The Muslims burn themselves out, much like the Koran incident and walk about muttering "well, we sure showed them! Hey Mustaphah--did ya see that flag burning? Woo weee we got us some fun now!"
B: The governments and newspaper grovel and beg for forgiveness to the Islamists, and making whatever concessions make everyone 'feel' good. Or
C: An extremist actually committs an incredible act of violence beginning another European conflict. Which
D: We will eventually be a part of
Hoping for A myself.
The problem is that our biggest weakness will be those inside our own society who try to stop us from fighting. Prior to people knowing the situation as they did on Flight 93, if someone had stood up to those Muslim swine on the September 11 flights, his fellow passengers would likely have tried to restrain him instead of joining him in the fight against our enemies. If the terrorists had attempted to take only one plane instead of four and one guy had beaten up all five terrorists to stop the attack, the average person wouldn't see September 11 as any kind of significant day. Unfortunately, the hero who stopped the killing by attacking the terrorist swine would have been fired from his job if he worked for a major company and was flying on company business. Too many Americans still want to "understand the perspective" of these monsters. They don't understand that peace will come only when we defeat the Islamofascists so badly that their few remaining leaders surrender forever or when we kill the last of them.

Wow, SoftballMom. I think you just smacked a home run with that post. Seriously. Excellent analysis.
