US sides with Muslims in cartoon dispute

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington on Friday condemned caricatures in European newspapers of Islam's Prophet Mohammad, siding with Muslims who are outraged that the publications put press freedom over respect for religion.

"These cartoons are indeed offensive to the belief of Muslims," State Department spokesman Kurtis Cooper said in answer to a question.

"We all fully recognize and respect freedom of the press and expression but it must be coupled with press responsibility. Inciting religious or ethnic hatreds in this manner is not acceptable."

Any names or contact info on who issued these statements supporting islam's feelings? I'd love to give them a piece of my mind.

I'm unclear as to what you are referring to. Do you think the Danish paper publishing the cartoons that they did was fabricated, or the muslim reaction?

I certainly am not able to point directly to Koranic verse that prohibits criticism of Mohammed. I've read about it here and elsewhere on the internet.

The State Department wasn't engaging in "freedom of speech" the State Department was engaging in diplomacy, which is their legal duty. Now you might disagree with the thrust of this tiny diplomatic maneuver, or you might agree with it. In any event, it has nothing to do with the State Department having or not having "freedom of speech". They are doing their job as they see it. That's all.

That is a very interesting piece of info. Thanks for sharing.

There is a strong Islamic militant appeasement component on the left. But it is good to see the DU people's huristic way of thinking has put free speech over that

"Inciting religious or ethnic hatreds in this manner is not acceptable."

Remember the anti-Americans who published the lies regarding the US flushing the Koran down a toilet? I think the above applied to that reprehensible action!

The muslim claims about blasphemy.

They never noticed in September when the cartoons were first published.

They had to invent three more cartoons far more offensive than the ones published.

And, despite posting on several threads, no one at all has been able to point me to relevant Koranic verses. I don't any longer think they exist.

Principles
As to whether the action by Die Welt could cause problems for Germany, just as the original publication of the cartoons has done for Denmark, Jacques Schuster comments:

"Yes, it could. But again we are journalists, and I want to cover the reality, and I can't think about these possible problems."

"I think we have our rules, and we have our principles, and one of our main principles is freedom of opinion and the press. In this case, I think that we stand for freedom of the press."

Department of State fubar alert! Never a peep when others draw tacky cartoons about Jews and Christians, but if "holy islam" or "holy Mohammed" (may he be blotted out) are disrespected, foggy bottom caves like wet cardboard!

I actually was mulling around working on her campaign if she ran. I refuse, however, to support someone who doesn't seem to think the values embedded in the US Constitution are sacred and universal.

Yeah, thanks a lot, USA. It's good to have you on our side when 1,3 billion raging assholes cry out for our blood just for upholding freedom of speech.

Oh wait, you side with assholes. My mistake.

You seriously think Condi does not share the same opinion? Her previous sycophantic statements regarding the religion of peace makes her position obvious.

The Islamists are using this whole thing for political purposes to incite rage and violence against the west. Let Europe deal with it for a bit, maybe they will wake up to the colonization by the Islamists of their countries.
