GET READY for the next mass-tort crusade: protecting our kids from the ravages of Big Cola. According to reports, a group of lawyers is gearing up to file lawsuits that will seek to blame Coke, Pepsi and others for obesity, tooth decay and other childhood health ailments. An article in the Boston Globe Magazine has called it part of a "national legal movement to make soft drinks the next tobacco." Instead of tar and nicotine, we'll be hearing about corn sweeteners and caffeine; maybe Dr. Pepper can stand in as the new Joe Camel.
Ridiculous? More like inevitable. For some time, a noisy campaign has been underway to portray the food and beverage industry as the villain in the nation's ongoing battle with the waistline. Without the snack hucksters' machinations, it seems, we'd all eat raw bell peppers and be reed thin.
Backed by "progressive" foundations, nutrition advocates are demanding a national obesity policy aimed at changing our collective diet, by force of law if necessary — or quite possibly by force of litigation. As one advocate, Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, put it: "If someone is saying that a 64-ounce soda at 7-Eleven contributed to obesity, that person should have his day in court."
That brings us to Northeastern University law professor and associate dean Richard Daynard, point man in the forthcoming courtroom onslaught against fizzy drinks. Long quoted in the media as a cheerleader for tobacco lawsuits, Daynard has now set out to assemble a legal strike force to file obesity actions. He wants to duplicate the success of the tobacco campaign, whose strategies included invoking "the children" and launching scores of suits on novel legal theories in hopes that one would stick.

OMG!!! Dublin DP!!!! We have to get several cases to bring back home every time we go through Dublin, Stephenville, or Glen Rose. I love that stuff.
I remember as a kid looking forward to Friday night. We got to have 1 Coke for our snack. It was the old large returnable bottles. You could cap what you didn't drink and save some for Saturday to make other siblings jealous
I get that at the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco when I go there to visit friends. That stuff is great - not as sweet as the corn syrup kind and it's fizzier. I always buy at least a case of it when I'm there.
Especially when you pour home made black powder, gasoline, fertilizer and diesel down ground squirrel holes and light it! Great fun for 12 yr olds with more brains than common sense. Sometimes I wonder how I survived early adolescence.
Oh, I'm sorry. You must not have gotten the Aspartame memo yet. It's formaldehyde dontcha know. I'd be happy to forward one to you, because I think I've have seven hundred copies of it in my email inbox. Oh, and I got one a couple of weeks ago about how Splenda is also bad for you also. Chlorine or something. Can't remember. Frankly...don't care.
I am actually addicted to Diet Coke. If I go cold turkey, I'm out for a couple of days while I go through withdrawals. I am trying to taper off slowly (again) because I KNOW water is much, much better for me. I just like Diet Coke and look forward to it. So...sue me (or someone I guess.)
I wish these busy bodies would just leave us all alone. Sigh. I would LOVE to know how much they actually enjoy life.

Not sure where you are but I see the Chicken Express fast food places around Dallas/Ft. Worth have Dublin Dr. Pepper in their drink dispensers..
My friend in Ft.Worth is a little put off by Chicken Express's sign with a dead chicken on it.

The only "choices" that causes these diseases are the ones of the patrons who decide to make eating an lifestyle, not just an occasional meal.
Chicken Express is the best fast food chicken place. I really like their stuff and #2 son is addicted to their gravy. We are good friends with a guy who now is very wealthy from running several franchises. He and his wife and kids were living in a double wide and working ungodly hours running their first store. Great guy!

You can't let them run lose and play anymore like we did when we were kids. Nowadays this is considered child neglect or endangering the welfare of minors.

That is my drink du jour, and I quite enjoy it, thank you very much. In fact, I will be partaking in one in just a little while. I would prefer that they bring back the old 8-pack glass (returnable) bottles--ooooh would I be smiling then!
As far as the kids go--the rule in our house is the children do NOT get to drink soda pop, except for an occasional root beer as a treat. Though they do play Nintendo, etc, they are also limited in that activity. Neither one of my boys have ANY kind of weight issue.
I suppose some day, Child Protective Services will be visiting my home because we (gasp) do NOT have the PEPSI under lock and key in some sort of secure vault.
My family is addicted to regular coke, though our consumtion has been reduced in the last couple of years.
And yes our dental bills has been a factor...

How about this: Parents, be responsible and don't let your children drink soda all day, every day. Then they won't be overweight and have tooth decay!
