Spains leading newspaper El Pais joined other European dailies by publishing a front-page cartoon of Prophet Muhammad today.
The cartoon, originally published by French daily Le Monde, depicts the head of the Prophet Muhammad made up of lines which say I must not draw Mohammad in French.
Many Muslims consider it blasphemous to illustrate Muhammad in any manner, to prevent idolatry.
El Pais did not comment on the decision to publish the cartoon on its front page, which was accompanying front-page news about the angry reaction among Muslims over the republication of the cartoons that already riled the Muslim world when a Danish newspaper ran them in September.
The drawings have divided opinion within Europe and the Middle East, where they have prompted boycotts of Danish goods, bomb threats and demonstrations against Danish facilities.
Two Italian Newspapers Print Muhammad Caricatures
Two right-wing newspapers in Italy today published the 12 caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that are inflaming the Muslim world.
The drawings appeared on the front pages of the Libero daily under the headline Muhammad rules here.
La Padania, mouthpiece of the Northern League government party, printed three of the drawings on its front page and the rest inside.
It carried a headline that said: Islam has already obtained the head of one (newspaper) editor No one is going to fire me!
It is not a challenge, a provocation, but the defence of freedom, La Padanias front-page editorial said.
Todays publication was the first time Italian newspapers printed all of the drawings. During the past week, newspapers have printed some of the cartoons as part of their coverage of the controversy.
Let a hundred flowery cartoons bloom!
Witty play on words, I guess he realizes firing isn't what he needs to worry about.
This shows an incredible amount of courage on the part of official Europe. The word courage is used only because of the abject cowering that has heretofore been the norm.
Good to see someone has a pair
When will the NY Slimes put these on their front page
Nah not a sow - goats are the preferred animal. LOL
The irony that a few cartonnists and newspapers would be the only ones to stand up to the jihadists in Europe is amazing.
Any insult to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) is an insult to more than 1bn Muslims and an act like this must never be allowed to be repeated, said Hamid Karzai, Afghan president, strong western ally and moderate Muslim leader."
"Ursula Plassnik, foreign minister of Austria, which holds the rotating EU presidency, said she understood the offence Muslims felt, adding that EU leaders needed to clearly condemn acts that insult religion."
"Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary-general, said he believed freedom of the press should always be exercised in a way that fully respects the religious beliefs and tenets of all religions.
The dispute began on September 30, when Jyllands-Posten, Denmarks biggest newspaper, published 12 cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, a move considered blasphemous in Islam. One of the cartoons showed the Prophet with a bomb under his turban. The Danish newspaper later apologised but the row escalated this week after several European newspapers reprinted the cartoons to assert the right to free speech.
Most daily UK newspapers decided not to reproduce the cartoons on Thursday. One cartoon appeared on The Spectators website but was quickly taken down.
The French government criticised France Soir, the first French newspaper to reprint the images. In Germany, religious and minority representatives sought to calm after Die Welt, the conservative daily, reprinted the cartoons on Wednesday.
HOORAY!
Do we not have one, single paper in the US willing to grow a pair and take a stand with their European counterparts for Freedom of Speech??
They're always quick enough to cover themselves with it after printing something vulgar and/or obscene!
Not even a conservative paper?.........Anyone?
This is good.
If many papers (and websites) publish those cartoons, the general public will know what type of materials the Mohammads consider offensive.
This is very educational. We should thank the newspapers and websites for their service.
Brit Hume showed several cartoons on Fox News last night and he and his guests even laughed at the cartoons.
You have mostly liberal papers in most major cities - they wouldn't dare post them - they are cowards.
Sigh..Well, it looks like worldwide Jihad again. These things have to happen once in a while. The last one occurred when Dagwood put ham on his sandwich.
Maybe this is just what Europe needed to wake them from their slumber.
They have always backed off in the past, but this is most interesting. .They better brace themselves for the reaction.
