"The road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting, yet it ends in danger and decline," railed President Bush in his State of the Union. Again and again, Bush returned to his theme.
"America rejects the false comfort of isolationism. ...
"Isolationism would not only tie our hands in fighting enemies, it would keep us from helping our friends in desperate need. ...
"American leaders from Roosevelt to Truman to Kennedy to Reagan rejected isolation and retreat."
Why would a president use his State of the Union to lash out at a school of foreign policy thought that has had zero influence in his administration? The answer is a simple one, but it is not an easy one for Bush to face: His foreign policy is visibly failing, and his critics have been proven right.
But rather than defend the fruits of his policy, Bush has chosen to caricature critics who warned him against interventionism. Like all politicians in trouble, Bush knows that the best defense is a good offense.

Pat's a total failure.
I am afraid Buchanan's mind is too tired to read something like a State of the Union speech. He must be working hard on his next book to pay close attention to anything that mattered.
I'm hardly a 'bandwagon republican', a 'bushbot' or a Neocon. I was born conservative and never even flirted with liberalism.
Buchanan may still be a 'conservative' in some ways, and 15 years ago he might have been a Good Conservative.... But now he is a complete loon.
I considered supporting him for President in the '92 election, but the closer I looked at him, the less I liked him. He was turning a little weird then, soon went 'round the bend' and has progressed to the full barking moonbat stage that he has been in the last few years.
He may occasionally be correct on a few things, but I thank God that he never got elected to any national office.
LOL!
Bump! He's not doing Reaganites any favors, that's for sure!
Film at 11... several years from now.
Pat Buchanan has been right, and is still right, about many things.
I can't believe anyone still hires this fool. I skipped the crappy article and went right to the insighful Freeper commentary. I'm feeling waves of Freeper mega-love for Buchanan.
The standard of living, in America, from Lincoln through dear old Silent Cal, was not only NOT the highest in the world, it wasn't anywhere near as good, as it is today! Facts matter and Pat stated none.
What Pat is, is a Pali loving, Jew hating, historical revisionist, who is also a bitter and befuddled old man.
And no, NEOCON doesn't and NEVER has referred to Reagan Democrats. Do, please, get your facts straight, before you post such blatant errors.
Pat is looking more and more like the cranky old guy who hangs around the K of C who nobody listens to, but who you can't kick out because he paid for life membership years ago.
You're so right.....
I can almost see the psychedelic bus, loaded with freepers wearing their Tie-Die T-Shirts and putting flowers in their hair heading to the Buchanan Love Festival '06.
Thank you Nosradamus but you forgot to make your comments in the form of a quatraine...like this.
With Florida Gore votes he will hold office
In the path of Ezola.
Though xenophobe wall will do them much harm
A new Reich to see the plume of smoke wail in the wind
Clever, funny, and absolutely brilliant takeoff. LOL
Thanks nopardons, but I noticed the other side of the Senate chamber is still sitting with a scowl and their armed crossed.
That they are...but Dems are stupid and classless.
