Just recieved a letter from a Col. in our department where I work that contained a picture of the cartoon recently run in the Washington Post (29th Jan 06). (http://members.cox.net/subtexel/wash.bmp) I thought you all would like to see the reponse the Joint Chiefs of staff wrote up to the Washington Post in regards to the 'cartoon'. (http://members.cox.net/subtexel/washpost.pdf). I can't believe the stooped this low! The response is set to run in tomorrows paper.

They must be in a contest with the NYT on who can disgrace America the fastest!

Yeah, I'm a constant lurker and registered just to post this.. I'm surprised I missed the other mentionings of this subject. Just trying to get it to as many people as I can, I was (and am) still pretty pissed off about this. I served in OIF (Saudi and Iraq) and OEF, and I don't think this is something to make fun of.

It's wishful thinking, but wouldn't it be great if some Iraq Vets abducted this bozo then buried him up to his chin in cow manure, and left him to bake in the heat for a day or so...So, he could contemplate how wrong his life has been since birth.

Disgusting, but soooo typical of the attitude that the left has towards our military. Our people in uniform are just more political footballs to be put in play as needed.

Except when they try to vote from overseas postings. Not fit to govern.

The Washington Post is despicable.

Like Rather and CBS, the "Enemy Within" no longer cares who knows about their Leftist agenda.

Great letter to the dipsticks at the Washington Post, but it didn't tell the Post folks to feel free to go straight to hell! Now that, my dear Generals, would have been my letter to those SOB's at the WAPO. Not a funny cartoon at all, and it is designed to humiliate our wounded military heroes, and I don't like it one damned bit. Shame on them for denigrating our brave men and women in the Armed Forces.

"I served in OIF (Saudi and Iraq) and OEF, and I don't think this is something to make fun of."

I served in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. (Retired Army, E-7.) It was over before my unit needed to go to Iraq, so I'm grateful for that, though I did serve two years traveling all over the USA to teach other states how to set up, fund and man Family Assistance Centers.

I did get some nasty paper cuts and a lot of speeding tickets, though. ;)

:)

I was about 8 during Desert storm... Thanks for serving us! I was stationed @ Tabuk AB, KSA during the kickoff of the war (was there from Dec 2002 - July 2003) and was @ Kirkuk from April 04 - July 04. Was in Saudi (PSAB) just after Sep 11th, was at Langley AFB during Sep 11 and we were the first to deploy the jets to intercept the planes but unfortunally it was a bit too late. :( I pretty much lived in the sandbox... And I don't regret it one bit!

No - tossed in a swine manure pit and left to pickle for a day is better. Much smellier and more mucky than cow manure.

"The Washington Post is despicable"

I am struggling to come up with the right adjective for the people in the media who have allied themselves with the terrorists.

As Dennis Miller observes "To call them scum bags is an insult to bags filled with scum."

"...and we were the first to deploy the jets to intercept the planes but unfortunally it was a bit too late."

Man! That must've been something. I'll bet your base was hopping that day.

We ALL "mobilized" that day; civilians and military types. Too bad the left forgets the horror and importance of that day.

Nice chatting with you! We have a lot of military-types of all ages and stripes that post here. You'll fit right in. :)

Any chance someone could post the letter? I can't pull it up, pdf screws up my computer.

I really doubt that I'll be impressed with words.
I'd like to see a little action.

Here is the letter I just mailed to the Washington Post. I suggest everyone do the same. I am going to find out who the parent company is (if any) and who the affiliates are who may post cartoons by this person.

Mr. Philip Bennett
Managing Editor, The Washington Post
1150 15th Street NW
Washington, DC 20071

To The Editor of the Washington Post:

I saw cartoon drawn by Tom Toles portraying a wounded, amputee in a hospital bed. I am completely outraged. I understand this is First Amendment material. People are free to say what they like as long as it does not endanger others. But this is indicative of a total lack of decency.

This person (and I use the phrase so loosely to describe someone who would pen such an unthinking, hurtful, inconsiderate, malicious "cartoon") who authored this “cartoon” obviously detests the military. His distaste for them and everything they stand for is evident in this work.

The military, in general, tries to inculcate loyalty, dedication, maturity, work ethic, respect, honor, pride, consideration and thoughtfulness. (Having been in the military, and grown up as the son of a 30-year Naval veteran who now rests in Arlington, I know that this is what the military tries to do. It doesn't always produce the desired result or level of result, but the effort is there)

The person that drew this cartoon, protected by THE LIBERTIES THAT OUR MILITARY FIGHTS, BLEEDS AND DIES FOR, has taken this opportunity to use a horribly wounded military person as a PROP to make a petty partisan political point.

A man, in a bed, with NO ARMS AND LEGS, who, at that stage, cannot feed himself, relieve himself, bathe himself, dress himself, walk, read a book on his own, change a television channel, pick up a phone, use a computer, hug his loved ones or any other number of things the rest of us, including this despicable excuse for a human being who authored this cartoon, take for granted. He has taken the liberty to shower disrespect on the sacrifice that many of our military personnel have suffered, using them as a tool in order to take a passing swipe at political policy he disagrees with.

As a condition for maintaining a continued relationship with your newspaper, I would like to suggest two things that would satisfy me as a reader:

First, require Tom Toles to spend a weekend at Walter Reed Hospital, helping care for the wounded men, particularly those in the Amputee Ward. He should be tasked with feeding them, helping them relieve themselves, and doing any small task they are unable to do for themselves.

Secondly, I ask you to request a sincere, public apology from Tom Toles, which if obtained, should be published prominently in your paper. Barring a public apology, any relationship with this person should be severed.

Here is a picture of the slimeball. Looks like such a nice guy. Maybe he is when he isn't involved in politics. Well, it is no excuse, in any case.

Absolutely disgusting. I wish I could say I was stunned, but no longer.

I'd urge everyone on this forum to do something about it, but who am I kiddin'?

Thank you.

I don't know how much leftists think people can stomach.

My younger daughter has a friend who was obliterated with his family in an accident today. This will be the 8th civilian funeral for us this year...all young people but two. I can't imagine if what she would think if she saw this photograph today.
