Letter to the Editor (regarding Washington Post "cartoon")
Letter Wed, 01 Feb 2006 | Dr. James Wasek

Posted on 02/01/2006 11:02:04 AM PST by pajama pundit

Washington Post Editor-- As a military verteran, I am starting a grass-roots campaign that I plan to spread throughout the entire Washington DC metropolitan area: that is to have every single service member and veteran that currently receives the Post to UNSUBSCRIBE as a direct result of your callous, disrespectful decision to publish Mr. Toles' editorial cartoon on 29 January 2006. To place a wounded American soldier in the context of that cartoon was nothing less than a raging insult and a spit-in-the-face to every military member that has fought, is fighting or will fight for democracy. Can you even comprehend the pain that the mothers of every wounded service member felt when they saw that cruel cartoon? Mr. Toles may not agree with the war and he has his freedom of speech right to draw what he wants and you have your freedom of the press right to publish what you want -- but the active-duty service members, veterans and supporters have rights also -- and we will display our rights where it will hurt you the most -- in the profit margin. I think you will see how much of an economic impact that the miltary families have in this area. The only solution to prevent what I hope will be financial disaster for you is: (1) Mr Toles should publically apologize to all miltary members, veterans and the American public and explain that he was purposely disrespectful and cruel -- and that he will never draw anything again that degrades the sacrifices that our fine service members make (in fact- it may be best that he take a leave of absense for a while); (2) You, as the editor, need to apologize to the same in regards to your poor decision-making in allowing such a tasteless cartoon to be published; and (3) The owner of the Washington Post needs to apologize to all of the readers for allowing such poor performance and decision-making to exist on the Post staff.

They got the right to print it, and we've got the right to go "apeshit" as you put it. That's the beauty of the 1st ammendment.

God bless you and your son. I appreciate the sacrifices made by your family for mine. Many thanks to all military personnel and their families.

A Cancelled subscription is not the same as calling for the death of the editor.
The Press has the right to their speech and the subscribers have the right to
object by cancelling their subscription

Thanks for the post. I was floored when I saw this on ABC News last night. When interviewed, Toles smugly said, "They [the Joint Chiefs] should focus on the availability of body armor to every soldier rather than the cartoon."

Hey, if we are going to go apeshit over this cartoon, we are no better than the Muslims flipping out about the Mohammed cartoons... come on... sure, that cartoon is tasteless, but the artist has a right under the Constitution to draw it.

He has a right to draw it, the WP has the right to publish it, and Americans have a right NOT to support any cartoonist or paper for any reason...
