In the court (and courts) of life and death, a little 11-year-old Massachusetts girl named Haleigh Poutre could be the next Terri Schiavo. For those who have not heard the tragic story, Haleigh was beaten nearly to death last September, allegedly by her adoptive mother and stepfather. The beating left her unconscious and barely clinging to life.
Within a week or so of the beating, her doctors had written her off. They apparently told Haleigh's court-appointed guardian, Harry Spence, that she was "virtually brain dead." Even though he had never visited her, Spence quickly went to court seeking permission to remove her respirator and feeding tube. The court agreed, a decision affirmed recently by the supreme court of Massachusetts.
And so, no doubt with the best of intentions, a little girl who had already suffered so much was stripped by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts of even the chance to fight to stay alive. If she didn't stop breathing when the respirator was removed, which doctors expected, she would slowly dehydrate to death.
Close Call
Then came the unexpected:

Why do they gag her? So she can't tell the truth about -- them. Thus do the bureaucrats cover their merciless, miserable butts.
They are holding her child hostage so they are the Master, she is the Slave.
As a survivor of decades within bureaucracies, I see the self protection of a bureaucrat as the expected reaction.
(Not that there is anything wrong with bureaucrats......)
The first order of business for an ingrained bureaucrat is to protect him/herself and their environment. That is primal, meaning they protect themselves first at all costs they can imagine. They will do so in the face of such incredible evidence against them, it would embarrass a rat.
So the reaction is not specific to this situation, but to any where they try to protect themselves from their own screw-ups.
Warning: horrible graphic scenes of Auschwitz.
We sailed past Auschwitz a few years back in the bone chilling dead of winter, on a bus bound for homes of relatives. Eerie. I still have the gold ring given me by one of the survivors, who became a Catholic priest afterwards. Many in the surrounding village of our relatives took their one way ticket to Auschwitz.
The death cult heritage carries on, more veiled, but of similar core, and closer than we might like to think.
It was Eichmann who organized the Wannsee Conference of January 1942, which focused on issues related to the "final solution of the Jewish question." From this point Eichmann assumed the leading role in the deportation of European Jews to the death camps, as well as in the plunder of their property.
Wasn't that about the same angle as Jim King's "legacy" legislation in Florida -- snuff the aged and plunder their property?
Carrie Hutchens has it right. Suicide is still available to the masses who want to no longer live. Why does a doctor need to become involved? Anyone who is tired of living can just off themselves using one of the usual ways. They can take a handful of pills or point a gun at their brain and pull the trigger. Maybe they can close themselves up in a garage and turn on the car motor. Carbon monoxide poisoning can feel like going to sleep (at least that's what the miner's notes said). There's no need to change any laws. That way the people who do appreciate the value of life, even a disabled life, don't have to worry that they'll be the next one to go to the death chamber. Just my two cents.
What?? At the Pinellas Park Hospice and Transfer Station, they are making money on their processing of "clients"?
I remember while living in Germany in the '60's some friends showed us a one-way street facility, a very pituresque and ginger-bread building, very pleasant. Handicapped would go in, and come out the hard way. It was a processing plant with all the charm of a theme park. I am sure folks in the neighborhood saw it as benign at the time.
God bless Pamela! Reading her words is very freeing, much the same way as when I listen to Rush. Someone can actually express the way I think about these cases.
I thank God for Terri, because she gave me a wake-up call. I was snoozing before. I paid little to no attention to these issues before, and now I am very alert and aware of them. I guess you could say that I was in a persistent vegetative state or a minimally conscious state about the importance of these issues, but now I am cognizant of them.
Hospice in Fla is paid $600 per day per patient. It would be cheaper for the state to put them up at the Ritz.
I am starting to hate that site. I don't want to have to give out personal info to read pages two and three.
We should send cards. However, imo, we should refrain from sending stuffed animals, balloons, flowers, cute pyjamas(I have a new sewing machine, and I'm going to make nice jammies for all the girls), or whatever will clutter up Haleigh's room. Cards are probably sufficient. Got address?
Does anyone know if the child can swallow food yet? I'm thinking about birthday cake and ice cream.
Social Services is sometimes a collection of brain dead idiots. It is no wonder that the first thought would be to CYA, when a child is damn near killed....after HOW MANY CALLS TO THEIR AGENCY?????
Tells me everything I need to know.
Hey, that's not a bad idea! I bet the Ritz would provide better 'comfort care' than some hospices!
I also dislike the sites where you have to register with them, but at least you can use bugmenot.com to get past that for most of them.
Any update on her condition?
Not much. If you go the last few posts on this thread we've been pinged to other articles. It doesn't sound like DSS wants there to be any new information about Haleigh's condition being reported on. Haleigh's biological mother is frustrated because she wants to talk about Haleigh's condition, but they (DSS) have threatened her that they will not let her see Haleigh any more if she says what she knows. Hopefully, they will reconsider this, but it doesn't look good right now.
Thank you very much. Please keep me posted and on your ping list.
