ABC NOW FEARING A MASS TUNEOUT (The Brokeback Oscars Effect)
NY Post ^ | 2/1/06 | DON KAPLAN

"Brokeback Mountain" and a slew of other arty, less-widely seen Oscar-nominated flicks are expected to take the polish off ABC's ratings for the Academy Awards this year.

With no big-budget films like "Titanic," "Gladiator" or "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" in this season's crop of nominees, ABC may be staring down the barrel of one of the lowest-rated Oscar telecasts in recent memory when it airs on March 5, say TV-industry analysts.

The Hollywood libs may as well go all out this year from the backlash they're already likely to get. Go ahead, libs: bash Bush, call him a Nazi, tear up a picture of the Pope, wear sashes declaring support of Communism, engage in explicit homo/sexual behavior on-screen, wear upside-down crosses, whatever floats your boat. You know you want to, and, more to the point, *we* know it as well. No one is watching this year anyway. You've already shown everyone who you are and what you're about, and the game is up.

I don't know of any theater that played it.

"gay propaganda."

I tend to agree. You know, I'm hooked on Project Runway because its interesting and there's a story, but a gay cowboy movie? Pu-leez. Ask yourself: if it were a movie about a male cowboy who falls in love with a woman cowgirl (or whatever), and everything about it was more or less the same, would it be a big deal? Nope.

Unfabulous.

I am 5'5", but the guy is ashamed of his name and his height.

I would laugh at him if I saw him in public for that alone.

That is a shame. I was thinking that they were doing the same thing as they did with Mountain and starting off slow to see if it gained mementum, but I see from various posts that they are purposefully making it difficult for people to see it so it does indeed fail and eventually Hollywood will say Christians don't have an interest in Christian Movies. That stinks, but I guess we have to expect that from them.

What is going on? I just looked at the list of nominees. I've got nothing against William Hurt, but he was in A History of Violence for like ten minutes before he got wasted. I can't honestly believe Munich got nominated for a best picture. I have nothing against what he was Trying to say, but c'mon, it could have been said in an hour and a half.

And, one more thing: can the Oscars give nomination to more than a bulk of four or five movies. I just can't believe with all the movies that got made this year that there were five worthy of acknowledgment.

Are you accusing them of fudging the box office numbers?

I heard they're packing the seats everywhere the movie is shown.

I dunno, one FReeper pointed out yesterday that most people seeing it were sneaking in through the back door.

So? That's still not what the movie is about. It's about the murder case that became his finest book.

Here are my predictions about the winners. Note that I'm not saying that who I think will win actually deserves to win, and, for that matter, the one most deserving of the recognition might not even be nominated in the first place.

Performance by an actor in a leading role
At least they didn't put Felicity Hoffman in this category. It's between Hoffman (Capote) and Ledger (Brokeback). I was thinking it would be a Brokeback sweep to give it the big push that it needs for DVD sales, but I think they'll share the wealth and give it to Hoffman. "Walk the Line" is being snubbed totally.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
George Clooney's politics beats out Gyllenhaal's homosexuality.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
Felicity Huffman wins by default because "Walk the Line" is being snubbed. The rationale will be "Hello? It's Reese Witherspoon." (So they'll go with a Desperate Housewife). (sidenote: the movie probably would have been more interesting if the lead was a male actor.)

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Didn't see any of them. (Actually, I haven't seen anything from any of the categories, so far, but you really don't need to to know how the voting will go. You only need to see them to know how they should go.) The women in Brokeback are an afterthought, but the actors won't win, so Michelle Williams will win. Rachel Weisz, however, will be the hottest one of the five there that night.

Best animated feature film of the year
I only saw "Corpse Bride" but I'm thinking "Howl's Moving Castle" wins. I don't know why, but I am. (I have to rent W&G.)

Achievement in art direction
Achievement in cinematography
Achievement in costume design
Achievement in makeup
Achievement in sound editing
Achievement in sound mixing
Achievement in visual effects
I have come to believe that the technical folks actually value their craft more than their politics, so I won't hazard many guesses because I've seen few of the films involved. King Kong will probably be tossed one and Geisha, which had been an Oscar contender not long ago, will probably get the costumes. Makeup will go to Star Wars or Narnia (which had nice period costumes, too, but wasn't nominated).

Achievement in directing
Ang Lee, straight off his directing of "The Hulk" is a shoe-in. ("Straigh off", heh heh, I crack me up.)

Best documentary feature
“March of the Penguins” was such a wonderful little picture that it probably won't win. At least there isn't a Moore film in the category. I don't really know the other movies in the category, so no further info.

Best documentary short subject
Based on the title alone, the winner is “God Sleeps in Rwanda”.

Achievement in film editing
Brokeback isn't nominated, so they'll toss this one to Munich. Walk the Line will be snubbed.

Best foreign language film of the year
Italy usually does well in this category, so that's “Don’t Tell”, but don't count out “Tsotsi” from South Africa.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
Another “Brokeback Mountain” win

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
For once, I haven't been hearing the songs on the radio, so I know little about them individually. Gut-check tells me to go with the pair of Dolly Parton and Transamerica.

Best motion picture of the year
Duh. “Brokeback Mountain” will repeat from the Director category.

Best animated short film
No information. Not political.

Best live action short film
No information. Not political.

Adapted screenplay
“Brokeback Mountain”. Granted, there's a lot of PC crap to spread the manure around, which might allow for a surprise.

Original screenplay
"Good Night, and Good Luck.” Screenplay by George Clooney & Grant Heslov is just about a lock. It'll be funny if Clooney loses out to Syriana, but they wouldn't do that to him.

And that's the way it'll be, Oscar Night 2006.

(p.s. - Rock Hudson was, too.)

According to a new biography of Marlon Brando, so was he and a lot of other Hollyweirdos. The book puportedly has a picture of Marlon performing oral sex on a guy as yet unamed. Seems Marlon $crewed anything with a whole.

Some names I recall being mentioned Cary Grant, and two unamed first ladies.

I will watch it. How else could I make fun of it later.

If you TiVo it, it doesn't count in the ratings.

I was not planning on watching. Usually do, but don't see any movies that really interest me. Saw Brokeback and really did not think it was all that great. Think it is being hyped (and nominated) only for political reasons. Certainly not close to any of the best movies I have seen.

So, I will definately tune out of the Oscars.

I am drawn to Project Runway as well....
The Challenges, the personalities, the talent,
The show does not focus on the Gayness which is why it works. A viewer can't not know most of the men are gay, but its not the theme of the show.
