ABC NOW FEARING A MASS TUNEOUT (The Brokeback Oscars Effect)
NY Post ^ | 2/1/06 | DON KAPLAN

"Brokeback Mountain" and a slew of other arty, less-widely seen Oscar-nominated flicks are expected to take the polish off ABC's ratings for the Academy Awards this year.

With no big-budget films like "Titanic," "Gladiator" or "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" in this season's crop of nominees, ABC may be staring down the barrel of one of the lowest-rated Oscar telecasts in recent memory when it airs on March 5, say TV-industry analysts.

Why in the world would you post this?

Where are your references?

Keep your snarky innuendo/speculation to yourself...!

"Hollywood is on a relentless March toward irrelevance to the average consumer."

Last time I went to a movie theater: 3 years ago, only to entertain a date.
Last time I bought a movie on tape or DVD: Last year as a gift for someone else.
Last time I rented a video: Ummm... never.

Joaquin Phoenix WAS Johnny Cash in Walk The Line...I think he should get the nod since the film was sandbagged for Munich.

Surfing through movie boards, many gays do believe that this movie is a mandate for public acceptance of the gay lifestyle.

Sounds like they may get hit with a dose of reality if the Oscar watcher numbers are so low that it is obvious that people were actively avoiding watching.

The history of dental floss is playing on another channel. That could be more interesting than the Oscars

However, I will watch it. How else could I make fun of it later.

Isn't that kind of like saying you're going to watch a really lousy movie on TV, just so you can make fun of it later?

Not a terribly effective or proper use of your time, I'm thinking...

They accuse President Bush of operating in a bubble. Go figure.

Lol--ain't it the truth? They can make it, and they can hype it to the skies, but they can't force us (yet--although I can't be sure about public schools) to watch it.

I used to suffer through a lot of TV trash to make Sheryl happy – including daytime talk shows if I wasn’t at work. She was hooked on Jerry.

I've known the Oscars were politically-motivated and irrelevant for years, but it really hit home for me again when Cinderella Man didn't get any nods this year.

CINDERELLA MAN did get a nomination for best supporting actor.

I haven't watched the Oscars in years -- same reasons as everyone else here: too left-wing, too contrived, too boring. This year it hit an all-time low, nominating that fag film, which I know is going to win, being that it's a cause celebre among, ahem, "certain" circles.

I might want to watch some of the Oscars just because -- don't laugh --PRIDE & PREJUDICE got nominated for a few. That, and HARRY POTTER, were the only 2 films I saw last year (besides the documentary on ENRON).

I may want to see CAPOTE & WALK THE LINE, both of which are well acted. And at least those films have some kind of redeeming mesasge or moral voice. Everything else has left me stone cold.

Did you see Disney try and say that this movie had no "Christian" elements, and that it is merely a "fantasy" movie.

CS Lewis was one of the prominent Catholic writers of the 20th century and the first book of his major work (a trilogy)has nothing to do with Christianity? Yep.

But, as far as being nominated for an Oscar, the movie wasn't that great...Lord of the Rings with a more obvious Christian element. This is Hollywood after all.

And, Brokeback has made quite a lot of money considering the subject matter, and the non-blockbuster element.
