ABC NOW FEARING A MASS TUNEOUT (The Brokeback Oscars Effect)
NY Post ^ | 2/1/06 | DON KAPLAN

"Brokeback Mountain" and a slew of other arty, less-widely seen Oscar-nominated flicks are expected to take the polish off ABC's ratings for the Academy Awards this year.

With no big-budget films like "Titanic," "Gladiator" or "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" in this season's crop of nominees, ABC may be staring down the barrel of one of the lowest-rated Oscar telecasts in recent memory when it airs on March 5, say TV-industry analysts.

And, Brokeback has made quite a lot of money considering the subject matter, and the non-blockbuster element.

I'm not sure if it made money for the studio. It didn't cost much to make, but they've been buying a lot of TV ad time for it

Some of them I am sure would say anything to be in a movie, for some to be a star is all that they care about, they would sell their soul for that.

they would sell their soul for that.

You are right, and that makes them the property of satan.

He is the actual enemy in all of this.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ransom Trilogy is just another name for the Space tril. But it wouldn't suprise me if he wrote another trilogy, considering the amount of work he produced...I guess that's what living alone for most of your life will get you. Keeps ya' focused.

"I will be watching Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness.

I own those myself! Just watched Army of Darkness a couple weeks ago....one of my favorites. That would be a good one to show opposite the Oscars....and without commercials....anyone listening?

"My understanding is that the majority of those who have seen this movie in the theater have snuck in through the back door."

There was an interesting call on the Medved show one day, but I haven't heard anymore about it:

A caller said he and his daughter had gone to their local multiplex to see Narnia, and they waited--seems like--over a hour in line to get tickets. Brokeback was at the same multiplex.

After they had been in line for a long time, they made, to the caller's surprise, an announcement that they were no longer selling Brokeback tickets as the movie was sold out.
The caller had said he had seen one or two people buy tickets for Brokeback the whole time they'd been in line.

When they got into the theater, they were still in line because Narnia hadn't yet started. There was nobody in the
Brokeback line, but it wasn't yet scheduled to begin.

When they were admitted to the the Narnia theater, he stuck his head inside the Brokeback theater, and there were a few people there.

Before Narnia started, he asked to talk to the manager and questioned the manager on the strange events. At first the manager tried to put them off, but then he threatened to throw the caller out if he didn't stop asking questions.

Michael asked if other callers had been at the same multiplex to call, but there weren't any callers that day.

The speculation by the caller was that the studio is cooking the books to get Brokeback to the required ticket sales figure to qualify it for the Oscar competition. Michael didn't argue with that supposition at all.

Count on me being tuned-out!

Of course, it wouldn't make any difference in their ratings because I didn't watch when Titanic or Gladiator or whatever were the big draws.

Not really an innuendo. He was pretty up front about it in letters to Greaves. The Michael White bio of Lewis includes some of the letters etc. The guy definitely had some foibles.

You got it...Narnia was my 3 movie in 7 years so it's folks like me who are putting their money where their mouth is toward Hollyweird who WON'T be watching for Brokenback to win.
