Reuters Additional Information
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police at the U.S. Capitol arrested anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan on Tuesday, shortly before President Bush was to give his annual State of the Union speech, a police spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman, Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, said she had no immediate details.
Sheehan had been invited to be a guest at the address to a joint session of Congress by U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey, a California Democrat.
Sheehan, who became a central figure for the U.S. anti-war movement after her soldier son Casey was killed in the Iraq war, won wide attention with an anti-war vigil outside Bush's Texas ranch.
CNN said Sheehan was arrested after unveiling a banner and was being held on Capitol Hill for about an hour, which would keep her away from the address, which was set to start at 9 p.m. EST.
Sheehan and other activists were arrested in September for protesting outside the White House without a permit, a misdemeanor that carriers a $50 fine.

'Peace mom' cuffed in House chamberPeace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday just minutes before the State of the Union address.WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday in the House chamber after she unfurled an anti-war banner just minutes before President Bush gave his State of the Union address.
Capitol police arrested Sheehan and questioned her for about an hour in a separate area of the House, a senior House official said.
Sheehan, who became a vocal war opponent after her son was killed in Iraq, was an invited guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-California, who has called for a withdrawal of troops in Iraq and supports legislation for the creation of a Department of Peace.
Sheehan has pestered the Bush administration since August, when she and hundreds of fellow protesters began demanding an audience with the president and camping outside his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
She also recently penned a book, "Not One More Mother's Child."
Sheehan and other relatives of troops killed in Iraq met with Bush during a visit to Fort Lewis, Washington, in April 2004, shortly after Sheehan's son was killed.
During that meeting with Bush, the president refused to look at pictures of Sheehan's son, didn't want to hear about him and "didn't even know Casey's name," she said.
The Vacaville, California, resident has said she'd like to meet with Bush again to discuss her opposition to the war.
Bush has refused to meet again with Sheehan and has taken issue with her calls for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
"She expressed her opinion; I disagree with it," Bush said in August. "I think immediate withdrawal from Iraq would be a mistake."
Holy smokes I haven't seen you in years. Still the same philosophical bent, I see.
BTW: "tell truth to power" is like so last year, really.
Is it too soon to blame Alito?
Somebody give that guy a medal for daring to stand within five feet of that beast!
Not this time.
Holy Ikes is that Murtha behind her?
Lol! Are they on the net yet?
Though he was certainly was critical of conservatives, he gives detailed observations of why he considers socialists and "fellow-travelers" the greatest threat to liberty.
It's something liberals say when they want to sound profound.
DU already did. But you wouldn't know that, thanks to the forums already being locked down. I'm thinking the link that someone posted to the thread slashdotted them out of commission.
yeah..like Herpes
I've had dialogs with her in the past and have found her to have some good moments. I don't have any animosity from her but I can't fathom how she can look at the same world we look at but see such different results. To her, down is up, left is right, and good is bad. It's as if she lives in a mirror world of reality, and I don't say that in a mean-spirited way. Most hardcore liberals are like that. Fortunately they're the minority in most parts of the country.
They are here. In this very thread. See 299.
Or, umm, 300. Durr.
LG is coming out of the ground now. This guy does get around, doesn't he? Where will he show up next? Perhaps he's at the SOTU tonight.
"She also recently penned a book, 'Not One More Mother's Child.' "
What about the children the terrorists kill, Cindy ... those 150+ Russian kids - those kids in Saddam's mass graves ... why don't they count, CINDY?
Is this a word? If it is, should I find it in a children's book?
Looterguy showed up at the SotU? Hooray! Heineken for everyone!
