UW-MADISON STUDENTS “SURVEILLANCE OF ANTIWAR ACTIVISTS MUST END NOW!”

UW-MADISON STUDENTS RESPOND TO PENTAGON MONITORING:

“SURVEILLANCE OF ANTIWAR ACTIVISTS MUST END NOW!”

MADISON, WI – Antiwar activists at the University of Wisconsin at Madison are responding to President Bush’s recent justifications for surveillance along with released Pentagon documents which label student protesters as a “threat” and news of our campus administration’s cooperation with FBI counterintelligence programs. The UW-Madison antiwar student organization, Stop the War! is hosting a press conference to defend ourselves against the Pentagon’s libelous allegations. The press conference will be immediately followed by a protest to counter recruitment by US Marines on our campus.

What: Stop The War! Press Conference

Where: Front Steps of the Memorial Union (800 Langdon St, Madison, WI)

When: 12 Noon, Tuesday January 31st

Non-violent, legal & constitutionally protected speech is being monitored by the Pentagon and has been labeled a threat to national security (reported by MSNBC: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10454316/). The document shows that eight university’s antiwar organizations have been monitored by the Pentagon for countering the presence of military recruiters on their campuses. (http://www.uwire.com/content//topnews012406001.html)

Last week, a New York Times/CBS News poll showed that 28 percent of the American population would support the eavesdropping on “ordinary Americans.” 68 percent support such surveillance of “Americans that the government is suspicious of.” The Pentagon document proves that those “that the government is suspicious of” are, in fact, “ordinary Americans.” This raises serious concerns among civil libertarians and especially among those targeted.

Recent revelations that UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, is sitting on an FBI education panel to “establish lines of communication on national priorities pertaining to terrorism, counterintelligence and homeland security” are unsettling. Previous “counterintelligence” programs (COINTELPRO) led by the FBI have monitored, infiltrated and disrupted student activist organizations in the past.

We, in Stop the War!, are ordinary Americans who - like the majority of Americans - oppose the military occupation of Iraq. This is our response to these allegations:

All surveillance of antiwar activists must end immediately.

Poor Americans shouldn’t have to kill, and risk being killed, for an education.

Responsible for untold destruction and countless deaths, the military should not be allowed to recruit on our campuses.

The University of Wisconsin must uphold its own anti-discrimination policies, which Chancellor John Wiley has admitted are violated by the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Our protest is constitutionally protected and legal speech.

We are ordinary Americans being monitored by our government.

We are in the majority

Here the socialists and communists at UW go again... They won't stop until the military is off campus and the College Republicans are banned.

If any anti-war group or group's individuals have proclaimed to support Al-Qaeda in any way there is probable cause to monitor them.

They are hung for other things. For treason, they should be hanged. :-)

"We are ordinary Americans being monitored by our government."

Hmmmmm.....me thinks they ascribe too much importance to themselves.....until now, they were probably ignored....now that they've outted themselves as allies to Al Quaida....well, let's start monitoring!

Classic case of LNM, or Liberal Narcissistic Martyrdom.

They claim they're being "surveyed" in a paranoid fantasy about becoming righteous martyrs who "are being persecuted for daring to stand up for what they believe in."

They need to grow up.

You'd think they'd be embarrased after their sycophantic love-fest with that Galloway or Garroway or whatever that guy's name was who was caught in a photo humping Uday Hussein's leg...

Their own press release show the FBI's wisdom in keeping an eye on these lunatics

We should all watch them MORE.

Any group who sings praises to those who would have my Son's heads sawed off with dull butcher knives should be more than surveilled, though.

I feel for you having to have THIS much to do with them. I'd lose it.

Not only are they dumb, they all think that groups like FreeRepublic and ProtestWarrior are paid to counterprotest them by the US government.
