Don't leave us to foreclosure Sunday, January 29, 2006 Here in a community full of ruined homes, it takes no imagination to predict an epidemic of foreclosures that could devastate families, cripple the recovery of greater New Orleans and strain the nation's economy. If your flood insurance payout isn't nearly enough to cover your mortgage, you wonder if you'll have to abandon your unlivable home. If you look down the block at a dozen other damaged houses and know that your neighbors are in the same bind, you understand the fear of losing your neighborhood to blight. If you travel daily past block after block of empty, flood-marked houses, you understand how large the hole in our economy could become. This explains why U.S. Rep. Richard Baker is not giving up on his proposal for a federally backed buyout of flooded-out homeowners and small business owners. He wants Congress to create a corporation that would release Hurricane Katrina's victims from their mortgages, sell bundles of property to developers and help get storm-ravaged land back into commerce.

Well, that's just fine, isn't it?
The way I see it, since we're only going to be taking our money to pay ourselves back, there really is no need at all to give anybody in NO that money, is there?
Since you're into posting your "conservative principles," what about personal responsibility?
Why didn't these people have home owners insurance AND flood insurance? If their houses are destroyed, the insurance will pay them what they insured them for and they can pay their mortgages off.
Why do WE have to pay them anything?
You don't seem the least bit upset about that for some reason.
Oh, I believe in personal responsibility.
But, it's funny thing.
I haven't yet met anybody whose property was destroyed by a hurricane who turned down federal assistance.
How about you? You live in a hurricane zone, if I recall correctly. Have you ever met anybody who turned down FEMA assistance, or the Red Cross, or free ice, after a hurricane?
I ask because I don't know. I haven't yet suffered a natural disaster, and I pray God I never will. But as a taxpayer I don't mind making relief available for those in need.
In case you don't realize it, it's not part of being a lawyer to get all emotional about the law.
It is what it is.
If you feel the need to emote about the law, talk to your congress critter, who can actually do something about it.
Neither do I. It's the people who think we OWE it to them that pi$$ most of us off. Most of us are sick and tired of hearing the whining coming from people who didn't have the brains to get themselves out of the way of a hurricane.
For years, the people of NO have sat back and let the politicians do everything for them, all the while screwing them out of the money the state did get from the federal government.
And now they want us to make it ALL RIGHT RIGHT NOW; well, too bad for them is what I say.
Yes, I live in a hurricane state; a state that is hit by more hurricanes or some portions of hurricanes than any other one -- and we don't sit on our butts and wait for FEMA to come and make it all right; our governor, a DEMOCRAT, was all over the last storms that hit us.
People need to grasp the fact that they LOST EVERYTHING and move on.
BTW, you really should read THIS article to get the full feeling for how the rest of the country feels about NO or THIS one to put some perspective on what the facts actually are.
You must not be hanging around with the right people, because even here on FR we had a LOT of Freepers who have been damaged by more than one hurricane, and yet they manage to pull themselves up by the boot straps and none of them are whining about what they're not getting.
You all sure get emotional about somebody else's money though, don't you?
That's nice. And I hope if anything ever happens to me I will be able to pull myself up by my own bootstraps.
Doesn't change the fact that, like it or don't, the law is the law. I am not casting aspersions on your emotions. They just don't matter in a court of law.
By "us all" I guess you mean lawyers, and I already know you hate lawyers.
Funny thing about that "Rule of Law." They aren't going to ask people like you to enforce it. They're looking to people like me.
Sure you are; you don't give one damn what anybody thinks about it as long as you get your fee, isn't that right?
They just don't matter in a court of law.
Gosh, I know; we wouldn't want anybody having a single thought in a court of law that a lawyer doesn't approve of, would we?
The reason we're in the mess we're in in this country is PRECISELY because of lawyers convincing poor "victims" that they're entitled to the world, regardless of who pays for it.
Yeah, people like me who might actually understand what's going on. Just like people like me don't get on juries because people like you might not be able to hoodwink them.
And I don't hate lawyers; I've worked with lawyers all my life; I just hate the ones that twist the law for their own benefit and use laws to get something for people who don't entitled to it.
Why do I instinctively reach behind me and check that my wallet is still in my pocket every time I hear that?
I lost homes two times to either divorce are a greedy co-owner. Each time I started over. I now own my home free and clear and the first thing I did was declare it homestead. I'm far enough out in the country where the chances are the city is not going to claim eminent domain. Did it without help also. Dam it grab hold and start over.
Now if NOLA were to raise the land above sea level where it wants to rebuild, ala Galveston, I could entertain being convinced it's worthwhile.
Get those Barges that are filled with Mississippi Mud that has been dredged from the barge lanes, and start filling. It could benefit the river and NOLA also.
You are very articulate at expressing your emotions. Congratulations.
Sorry, but I am unable to share your emotional wavelength.
Whether you like it or not, rational appraisal of the world as it actually is will prevail.
So write some checks. Knock yourself out. Of course, it's usually Democrats who say exactly what you just said who then walk into the polling place and vote to make ME write checks.
An excise tax on toilet paper?
Not so sure about that. Have you seen what some of those people do for beads. Gives an old mans heart and optic nerves some healthy exercise.
If that is the case, it sure as hell won't come from attorneys.
:-)
The most conservative member of my family is a banker in Bay St. Louis whose property took in 20 ft. of water, diehard rockribbed Republican and even he and his family lived in a FEMA trailer until a few weeks ago.
I have yet to meet anybody who turned down federal assistance when they needed it and it was offered.
I don't write the laws, and, my guess is, neither do you. All I can do is obey them, whether I like them or not.
My charitable contributions are another matter.
