My hand gun of choice has always been .45 1911. Full size and compact carry. And I didn't even have to go to West Point to fiqure out this was the best "heater" ever made.

The issue M1911 was a crappy pistol. Inaccurate as hell
as issued to line troops. That's not to say there's anything inherently wrong with the .45 caliber itself because its not. But the relics they issued to us in the early 80's were ridiculous. Got the 9, and could actually hit something.
I've got no problem at all with an updated .45. I'd rather have fewer rounds in the magazine if I knew those rounds were going to do something when they hit.

PING!!!

I understand that in tests in which gelatin was used to simulate human flesh, the 9mm outperformed the .45 auto. Therefore, the .45 is a less effective weapon should we be attacked by jello monsters from outer space.

Various designs are being evaluated, but all must be .45 caliber and have a eight round magazine (at least), and high capacity mags holding up to 15."It also wouldn't hurt if they lengthened the case a few thousanths so it would hold a bit more powder.
The standard .45 ACP load is essentially 6 grains of Unique. If they could up that to 7-8 grains, they would get a significant gain in velocity and energy.
Just a thought.

Oh brother. The recoil on the .45 was a B-TCH on the battlefield!
I'd stick with the Baretta. Tolerable recoil, gets the job done. Then again, I also carry a .40, because I too fear that the 9mm isn't enough.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, so this may be a repeat, but this should be in the Breaking News section!

Among other hand guns I have an old 1911 .45, and the sweetest .32/20 Smith & Wesson you ever saw. When we go to the cabin I carry both. Never had any problems, never had a reason to use either, but it's comforting to know that they are there. Also have an old Savage double barrel 10 guage that stays there. 00 Buck loaded and ready. Never had to use that either, but it is good to know it's there if I need it.
I'd rather be armed and ready than unarmed and vulnerable.

That 9 mil is the most worthless POS I've ever had the displeasure of shooting.

Easier to maintain? Granted, hand fitting the lockup and bushing will give match grade accuracy and takes quite a bit of skill, but that's for the armorers to do! Even stripping a 1911 down to the pins is something that anyone can do. and while field stripping a 1911 isn't quite a quick as with an M9, it's pretty darned easy!

Aside from the caliber/make/model debate, has anyone seen confirmation of this? I've been looking at defenselink.mil, but haven't seen anything related to the pistol change.

I have a WW II vintage 1911, a Kimber and a cheap Llama. They all shoot well and I personally prefer the feel and handling of Mr. Browning's pistol. Even with the Llama I can put all 8 rounds in a paper plate at 25 yds.
Fun thread. I've read every post.

Now get rid of the M-16 and make a real rifle caliber that isn't deflected by twigs!
