After two decades of use, the U.S. Department of Defense is getting rid of its Beretta M9 9mm pistol, and going back to the 11.4mm (.45 caliber) weapon. There have been constant complaints about the lesser (compared to the .45) hitting power of the 9mm. And in the last few years, SOCOM (Special Operations Command) and the marines have officially adopted .45 caliber pistols as official alternatives to the M9 Beretta. But now SOCOM has been given the task of finding a design that will be suitable as the JCP (Joint Combat Pistol). Various designs are being evaluated, but all must be .45 caliber and have a eight round magazine (at least), and high capacity mags holding up to 15. The new .45 will also have a rail up top for attachments, and be able to take a silencer. Length must be no more than 9.65 inches, and width no more than 1.53 inches.
The M1911 .45 caliber pistol that the 9mm Beretta replaced in 1985, was, as its nomenclature implied, an old design. There are several modern designs out there for .45 caliber pistols that are lighter, carry more ammo and are easier to maintain than the pre-World War I M1911 (which is actually about a century old, as a design). The Department of Defense plans to buy 645,000 JCPs.
SOCOM will, with input from other branches, handle the evaluation and final selection. This will take place this year, and if the military moves with unaccustomed alacrity, troops could start getting their JCPs next year. But dont hold your breath.
I dont understand why the US even puts up with the Geneva BS. Every other country wipes their butt with it. We shoud start using hollow and soft points as well as incindiary weapons, and other weapons prohibited by it.
That is consistent with what I have seen and what I have heard.
Glock bump. Figured this would interest you.
Rediculous indeed. Dealing with suicidal terrorists demands all the killing power we can get. And the Geneva Convention serves no real purpose anyway.
A 22 can do some mean damage if it hits your rib cage and starts bouncing around.
My hand gun of choice has always been .45 1911. Full size and compact carry. And I didn't even have to go to West Point to fiqure out this was the best "heater" ever made.
I agree! Even when fighting force-on-force we should just tell the Geneva Conventions to go pound sand.
Have you seen this, Joe?
The Desert Eagle. One of my favorites :)
I beleive you are correct, the same thing occured in the rifle target shooting fraternity and the issue was resolved by using an innert filler (cotton balls) to hold the powder in place. Powders are designed to burn at a specific rate and that rate is controlled by grain size, shape, and coating. Changing the surface area amount exposed to burning can cause the charge to burn faster causing a spike in pressure.
It's about time!
And it should not be. Why should we be forced to use 'kinder gentler' bullets? Especially against barbarians who are willing to blow themselves up.
Sig P226 in 9mm was my last purchase about four months ago. When we moved from upstate NY to NC, I bought a P232 for carry. Both in stainless. We like them a lot.
"Safer weapons and safer bullets.."
yup... and flashover's even Worse in a rifle!!!
Use 45 +Ps..
And a double charge will not destroy a pistol if the case fails first. It actually acts as a safety valve and releases pressure down the mag well, usually blowing the mag out and cracking the grips on a 1911. This is one reason the pachymer grips were so popular, they had steel inserts in them.
I can't find any reference to the federal recall of 40S&W ammo, but will continue to look.
1970 Series or later had a bushing on the barrel to improve accuracy.
crazed moros requires 45 caliber
You're right.
---snip---
During the American occupation of the Philippines in the early 1900s, Moros, marked by tiger-eyes and red headbands - signifying a resolve to kill until killed - strode singly down the streets blading everything in their path, embracing the belief that every slain Christian assured their places in heaven. So tenacious was the Moros rampage that hundreds of reports by American soldiers surfaced, stating that the slugs of .38-caliber pistols failed to stop the advancing Moros. As a result of those reports, the .45-caliber pistol was designed and issued to American servicemen. Although the Moros religious fervor was a crucial element in their destruction, it was the use of their bladed weapons that allowed the bloody chaos to succeed. The art they so deftly employed was Kali.
