OOOPS I just posted opposing opinions about this...

I said I agree with you...but earlier I was saying that I want to see Reid and Pelosi go DOWN with the footage of their "culture of corruption" behind them...

Decisions, decisions....kind of like with a troll, you want them zotted....but, you also want to "play" with them awhile...

Oh...well...win-win situation then.

if anyone on either side is found to have ties to Abramoff or his lobbying firms that are not above board, they're not going to be able to hang on

I think you are right and the whole country will be better off for it.

"Then, Burton brought up ANWR and offshore drilling...but, Dingell said NO>..we need electric cars...and nuke energy.

Well...we do need nuke energy...but the dems will NOT give, when it comes to drilling ANYWHERE..."

My question ---- can a US company do the drilling alone without Government approval. Like can any oil company start drilling in ANWR or somewhere else on their own?

LOL. Yes, it is fun, and the fact is that such stupendous hypocricy as we have seen from the likes of Reid and Pelosi deserves to be caught out and punished in a very public way. Harry turned out to be a less smooth version of Daschle and Pelosi is just, well, goulish, and dumb to boot. I will never know how she prevailed over a candidate like Ford, Jr.

"To me it seemed he did very well, but not the stellar performance he had at K-State."

Yes, I thought he did a great at K-State. I'm hoping he does a great job giving the SOTU.

Speaking of which, I have the radio on and was listening to a replay of a Michael Medved show from earlier this week. He had this woman on that is coordinating a hugh protest - they want to be so loud that no one hears Bush. She claims to be a Communist, but only likes certain ones - Mao is her favorite. When Michael asks her what she thinks about the new book (I forgot the title) that claims that Mao killed 70 million people she said, that's not true. Michael said well many historians agree it was at least 35 million. She of course changed the subject. According to Michael, Maxine Waters and a few other reps have signed on. She kept saying they wanted to change the regime and get Bush out. Michael pointed out that Cheney would then be Prez and she said they wanted him out, too. Michael said well then what about Hasstert? Pause - - well, according to the Constitution, he's next in line to take the reins - - pause. Well, he wouldn't be as bad, she said. LOL! I'm wondering if she even has a clue who Hasstert is! She was probably trying to figure out if he is a R or a D ;-)
Sorry for getting off on a tangent - I just couldn't believe how ignorant and closed-minded she was. At any rate, here's the info I found on the protest.

Bush Administration Seeks to Squelch State of the Union Protest at Capitol on January 31 January 22, 2006
World Can’t Wait Capitol Hill Office: 511 ‘C’ St. NE Washington DC 20002, Stanton Square DC PRESS CONTACT: Don Spark, 202-536-4310, donspark@worldcantwait.org

Press Conference: Monday, January 23, 9:30 a.m. National Press Club, Edward R. Murrow Room 529 14th Street, NW Washington DC

The Bush administration has expanded the special security zone around the Capitol, effectively denying a meaningful public space for a protest called by World Can’t Wait-Drive Out the Bush Regime during the State of the Union address on January 31, 2006. This action, one of many held simultaneously that night at 8pm EST in cities and towns across the country, calls for symbolically “drowning out Bush’s lies” and demands “BUSH STEP DOWN.”

At a meeting on January 10 with the National Park Service Police, Capitol Police, and National Parks Department, the World Can’t Wait was offered the area surrounding the Capitol Reflecting Pool for the January 31st gathering. This was accepted by World Can’t Wait. However, on January 19, the organization received word that this area had been reclassified as part of a “secure perimeter” for that day.

In addition, the grass areas of the National Mall have been closed for “turf renovation” up to 7th Street. Thus, the proposed demonstration area is restricted to the “gravel and concrete walkways of the national Mall between 3rd and 4th Streets.”

Travis Morales of World Can’t Wait-Drive Out the Bush Regime responded: “This so-called permit would have the effect of dispersing and disrupting this First Amendment protest by preventing a large, cohesive gathering anywhere near the Capitol. We’d have to go a mile away to 7th Street to even have a stage. We’re mobilizing people to challenge this outrageous prohibition, and we’re pursuing legal action.”

World Can’t Wait has already received a permit for a national demonstration at the Ellipse on Saturday, February 4.

Both the January 31 and February 4 actions were announced in a full-page ad in the New York Times published January 20, signed by Edward Asner, Harry Belafonte, Michael Eric Dyson, Niles Eldredge, Eve Ensler, Jane Fonda, Martin Garbus, Paul Haggis, Jonathan Kozol, Jessica Lange, Lewis Lapham, Tom Morello, U.S. Rep. Major Owens, Sean Penn, Harold Pinter, Susan Sarandon, John Sayles, Richard Serra, Rev. Al Sharpton, Cindy Sheehan, Serj Tankian, Studs Terkel, Kurt Vonnegut, U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, Cornel West, and Howard Zinn.

Good question, and I don't know the entire perimeter of the licensing and permitting requirements.

ANWR is "government owned" land, so any activity there is subject to a lease, license and permit.

Off-shore activity is similary regulated, and exploration and extraction rights are also leased.

I'm not sure about drilling on private land. Years ago, I leased mineral rights for any oil underneath my plot of land, to a firm that was exploring the area. Some states, probably all of them, have a permiting process for drilling well on private property. The Feds impose OSAH workplace safety and EPA environmental protection regimes per the scope of those agencies' regulations.

The uproar began moments after the new judge, Raouf Abdel-Rahman, took his seat at the bench, signaling the resumption of the trial after a seven-week break.

Sternly addressing the court, Abdel-Rahman announced that he would not allow his courtroom to be used by the defendants to make "political speeches."

When Saddam's half brother, Barzan Ibrahim, rose to complain, a yelling match erupted, and the judge ordered Ibrahim to leave.

Screaming that the court was "the daughter of a whore," Ibrahim was dragged from the courtroom by four guards, as Saddam, the six other defendants and their 13 lawyers leapt to their feet and began shouting.

It gets better....

"The court has decided to throw you out," the judge responded.

"Don't say I'm being thrown out!" Saddam shouted furiously. "You are Iraqi, and Iraqis show respect for people who are older in age. I led you for 35 years and now you say, `Throw him out'? This is shameful of you."

"I am a judge and you are a defendant. Shame on you," said the judge.

"I decided by myself to leave," Saddam insisted. "Don't say I'm being thrown out."

"Do you want to leave? You are being thrown out!" countered the judge.

I LOVE THIS JUDGE!
