Biden Silent on Reid Stepping Down
Red State ^ | Jan 29th, 2006 | Nick Danger

Posted on 01/29/2006 2:28:02 PM PST by george76

Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) failed today to address rumors that Nevada Senator Harry Reid will step down next month as Senate Minority Leader.

Reid has been stung by revelations that his political action committee (PAC) accepted more than $60,000 in contributions from Indian tribes linked to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Appearing on CNN's Late Edition, Biden avoided discussing either the Reid situation or any upcoming changes in Senate Democratic leadership.

Reid is no stranger to scandal, having been the subject of a 1979 Justice Department probe into allegations that Reid — then Nevada Gaming Commission chairman — had received bribes through mob lawyer Oscar Goodman and Tropicana attorney Jay H. Brown.

The probe officially cleared Reid, but he subsequently received numerous contributions from gambling industry figures, including Brown.

Some Democrats are worried that Reid's continued presence in the Senate leadership undermines Democratic hopes of scoring significant gains this November.

"Reid is going around the country talking about a 'Republican scandal' — about Republicans accepting one- and two-thousand dollar contributions from Jack Abramoff, when his own PAC took in $60,000," ...

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, appearing on Fox News Sunday, made no announcements concerning Reid's status, but did comment on the growing controversy.

Moderator Chris Wallace asked Dean, "if we find that there were some Democrats who wrote letters on behalf of some of the Indian tribes that Abramoff represented, then what do you say, sir?"

Without mentioning Reid by name, Dean replied, "That's a big problem. And those Democrats are in trouble. And they should be in trouble."

Just popped back on for a few minutes - I think the Dims will hold off voting as long as they can tomorrow so they can blow their hot air, spew their lies, and bloviate some more (got to get some $s from their base and Soros). Couple of interesting threads recently posted -- doesn't look like a filibuster will work (but we could have told them that a few days ago)

A Principled Stand On Alito (The DLC opposes a filibuster)
Democrat Leadership Counsel ^

Posted on 01/29/2006 2:27:33 PM PST by Pukin Dog

I’ve spent no time on Free Republic today, because I’ve been monitoring my favorite nut-job sites to see whether or not they were actually going to go ahead with their incredibly stupid plans to attempt a filibuster against the Senate Confirmation of Judge Alito.

I’m telling you folks, if you ever wanted to see Liberal madness in action, just pop on over to one of these Democrat web sites. But I warn you, please do so before eating if you don’t want to risk tossing your cookies.

What you will join me in witnessing, is the inward implosion of the Left, brought to you by the Flipper-in-Chief, John Kerry. Never has one man’s ego done so much for his enemies, as what John Kerry does for us this week. Thanks to Kerry, every one if his potential fellow contenders for the Presidential nomination in 2008 are being forced to follow him over the same cliff and support this doomed effort, just to maintain their standing with the wacko-left.

What this tells me, is that Congressional Democrats are so bereft of ideas, while at the same time so hard-up for campaign dollars, that they can be led around by the nose by the likes of those who fill the pages at Daily Kos and other wacko-left hangouts. This weekend, the wacko left said “JUMP”, and Senate Democrats said “How High, baby?”

The calls (threats) have gone out wide and far, first it was Di-Fi, who claimed she would not support a filibuster. But when the wacko’s got her fax number and reminded her that her special brand of “well formed arguments” would no longer be funded if she did not flip. She flipped so hard, I hear she is still dizzy from the G forces.

>snip

Here is a snipped of their article:

But we stress this last point: in the Senate debate on this confirmation, Democrats should focus on Alito's judicial philosophy, and discard the personal attacks that figure so prominently in some of the interest-group campaigning against his confirmation. Such attacks at best distract from the principled case against Alito; at worst, they undermine it.

For the same reason and others, we do not think Senate Democrats should try to filibuster this confirmation. A filibuster is certain to fail; indeed, the Senate is certain to respond to a filibuster by outlawing them permanently in judicial confirmations. Using this weapon now would stake Democrats to the implausible argument that Alito's inevitable confirmation is the most egregious act of the Bush administration and the Republican Senate, going into a critical midterm election.

Reid Concedes Dems Lack The Votes
RedState.org ^ | 01/29/2006 | California Yankee

Reuters reports Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Democrats lack the votes to block Judge Alito's confirmation:

"Everyone knows there is not enough votes to support a filibuster," Reid said, referring to the procedural roadblock that some Democrats wanted to use to put off a vote on Alito.

Even after Senators Feinstein and Reid flipped flopped and decided they would now support Kerry's filibuster against Alito, there are still seven Democratic Senators who have said they will not support a filibuster against Alito's confirmation:

Akaka
Biden
Conrad
Dorgan
Durbin
Landrieu
Pryor
Salazar

Then there are the three Democrats who have announced they will vote for Alito's confirmation - Byrd, Johnson and Ben Nelson.

No Republican senator will support Kerry's filibuster. Even the two Republicans that haven't revealed whether they will vote for Alito's confirmation, Chafee and Snowe, say they will oppose a filibuster.

According to the Boston Globe , Kerry won't find more than 30 votes:

But high-ranking Senate aides said the best Kerry and Kennedy can hope for is to persuade 25 or 30 Democrats to sign on -- well short of the 41 votes they need to lock in unlimited Senate debate and kill the nomination.

Reid said he would support Kerry's filibuster "to at least send a message." Sadly, the message is that the Democrats are obstructionist sore losers.

All his opponents in the primary have to do is show pictures of McCain and Hitlery in ANWR and the voters will go screaming to his opponent.

This is in response to Sen. Hagel (R) being upset over the Rove comment ------- Rove characterized the Democrats as being in a pre-9/11 mindset and the Republicans being in a post 9/11 mindset.

I applaud Carl Rove for his statement - for including the whole of the Democrats on this issue. The Democrats are against President Bush on every turn. It is my opinion it is up to the Democratic Party and individual Democrats to separate themselves from their own party (each other) - it is not the responsibility of Republicans to state the Democrats position, to stick up for them. I want to hear democrats denounce for themselves, loud and clear.

As an example hillary clinton just completed a 'West Coast Tour' lambasting President Bush - if you didn't know better, you would have thought she was speaking about the clinton Administration.

But Ms Plantation supports our troupes!!!

Yet she just gave ammunition to the enemy and out men and women will die because of her words.

Electric cars are not the answer, either. Last summer I was watching the evening news from Phoenix because they had been hit with a big monsoon storm and several people with hybrids were really ticked off because they had gone through some deep water and their cars shorted out and quit running... remember, in a lot of the models the batteries are down in the drive shaft area because of the space issues.

Yes, they are just like Kerry, gifts that keep on giving.
We may not have to worry too much - - Pubbies get other Pubbies to step down on the slightest suggestion of impropriety. Dims just say everyone does it, lie and/or ignore anything one of their's did and keep going. That said, I think if anyone on either side is found to have ties to Abramoff or his lobbying firms that are not above board, they're not going to be able to hang on - - if the Congress doesn't ask them to step down, the American people will be sure they're made to.

Dean perpetually suffers from FIM Disease... loved his pandering: "When the voters put our party back in power in November we'll have a bill on the Presidents desk in 100 days to clean up government."

Cantwell's campaign gets boost from a high-profile colleague (Hillary Clinton)
The Seattle Times ^ | January 28, 2006 | Keith Ervin

Posted on 01/28/2006 5:09:13 PM PST by Seattle Conservative

Sen. Hillary Clinton gave a fundraising boost to Sen. Maria Cantwell's re-election Friday, headlining a Seattle luncheon that attracted more than 1,200 people, according to the Cantwell campaign.

The crowd paid $150 to $1,200 a plate to hear the first-term New York senator, considered in political circles as a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 and either the best or worst decision the party could make in its effort to recapture the White House. The lunch, inside Qwest Field, was closed to the media. The Cantwell campaign declined to say how much money was raised.

>snip

A group of Democratic military veterans issued a letter criticizing Clinton for holding a fundraiser they said could siphon away money from local Democratic candidates and for "your strong support for the immoral war in Iraq."

One of the veterans involved in the protest letter was Jim Rassman, who credited 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry with saving his life during combat in Vietnam, and who campaigned for him.

Never before have I seen a freeper so seemingly delighted at the president not fighting back about lies told about him in the media.

Yes, it's the old media. And yes, we all hate it/them. But apparently you don't understand that millions of people still get their news from that old media.

And millions of people are left with the impression that the president lied about this or that because, as has been noted by so many freepers and pundits, the president let an awful lot of lies stand about him last year. You think that's a good thing.

And when freepers happen to mention that it's not a good thing, you go off on this strident bullying act and you should really stop.
