Molly Ivins, battling breast cancer afresh, sounds as feisty as ever.
The South Austin resident continues writing her left-of-center column, raising money for the journal where she forged her tart take on politics and, of course, cheerfully gigging Republicans such as the well-coifed governor of Texas. Ivins, 61, tongue-in-cheeked that Gov. Rick Perry's trip to Iraq this week will slow anti-American insurgents. "The mere sight of his hair will do a world of good," she said.
She chatted with two visitors to her home office in Travis Heights without donning her wig of reddish-blond locks; her pate was nearly bald.
The California native, who grew up in the tony River Oaks section of Houston, fielded her latest (and third) cancer diagnosis around Thanksgiving. Surely she could be excused for feeling sorry for herself or slowing down.
"Actually," she said, "I feel pretty good." Renewed chemotherapy appears to be helping.
Ivins has all but forbidden gifts of food and other items. She was overwhelmed with well-intended advice and goodies after she wrote of her initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 1999. The outpouring kept her from telling readers of the recurrences in 2003 and two months ago, her assistant, Betsy Moon, said.

There is a new drug for breast cancer that I know has been given to some patients who have not been declared cancer free after previous treatments. The drug is very strong, but has a much higher cure rate. Someone was just telling me that her doctor had put her back in treatment.
Correct. I prefer that she regain her health so we can slap her around on her political views for years to come. She and people like her keep the Democrats in the minority.
LOL
Unfortunately, Linda, there will always be FReepers who will embarrass us and post something that will be C&P'd to liberal sites to prove what despicable people conservatives are.
Nope. I'm a lost cause when it comes to Molly Ivins.
She is really against Hillary. I like that.
I never paid attention to her before. Smart woman. I respect that.
Amen. Otherwise, I might have to find another source for TP.
I'm praying for a good outcome for her, though I disagree with her vehemently on just about everything!
I have dear ones who have had this dreadful disease.
Prayers for you Molly, wishing you health and strength.
Prayers for Ms. Ivans.
That is why though I don't wish death on her, it's real hard to shed tears for a hardcore socialist like Ivins who has done so much harm over the years with her asinine leftist rantings. She's spread a lot of socialist poison. Excuse me for my cold heartedness.
My most sincere best wishes for her full recovery.
I hate cancer FAR MORE than any American political adversary.
Please, be strong and beat this, Molly!
Or at least vastly more charitable than their counterparts on liberal forums.
Sorry to hear about this. Prayers for Ms. Ivin's health and recovery. I hope that if somebody doesn't have something nice to say in this thread, that they NOT POST ANYTHING and keep it to themselves. Let's not act like the people over at the DUmster.
Maybe the chemo treatments will clear her mind.
Cancer is an awful thing. I wish her the best of luck fighting it, and hope she continues to write her tired leftist screed so it can continue to be slayed in the arena of ideas.
"Unlike some other liberal women, she hasn't wished disease on conservatives so I hope her suffering is minimal."
Actually, Ivins is a nasty piece of work when she wants to be. When John Connally died, here column started something like "You know you're not supposed to speak ill of the recently deceased, but someone has speak the truth ..." or words to that effect, and then she ranted about how bad a man he was. Which he wasn't, but then Molly's never held back in hating non-liberals when it suited her.
Get well Molly!
We need her around in 2008 to help tear Hillary down and prop up some far-left liberal.
