Molly Ivins facing third round of cancer
American-Statesman ^ | January 27, 2006

Molly Ivins, battling breast cancer afresh, sounds as feisty as ever.

The South Austin resident continues writing her left-of-center column, raising money for the journal where she forged her tart take on politics and, of course, cheerfully gigging Republicans such as the well-coifed governor of Texas. Ivins, 61, tongue-in-cheeked that Gov. Rick Perry's trip to Iraq this week will slow anti-American insurgents. "The mere sight of his hair will do a world of good," she said.

She chatted with two visitors to her home office in Travis Heights without donning her wig of reddish-blond locks; her pate was nearly bald.

The California native, who grew up in the tony River Oaks section of Houston, fielded her latest (and third) cancer diagnosis around Thanksgiving. Surely she could be excused for feeling sorry for herself or slowing down.

"Actually," she said, "I feel pretty good." Renewed chemotherapy appears to be helping.

Ivins has all but forbidden gifts of food and other items. She was overwhelmed with well-intended advice and goodies after she wrote of her initial diagnosis of breast cancer in 1999. The outpouring kept her from telling readers of the recurrences in 2003 and two months ago, her assistant, Betsy Moon, said.

I've never agreed with her politically, but somethings are more important than where some one stands on political issues. I wish her the best and a speedy recovery.

I did not know this. I saw her on C-Span today and she was wearing a stocking cap. I guess Chemo has taken her hair.

I don't like her politics either but would not wish the "Big C" on anybody.

Saw her on CSpan this morning, not looking too good. I wish her the best, but often wonder why I should care what she thinks.

You know something, I could be really nasty here. Really nasty, but I won't, and I hope everyone else on this thread does the same thing. We are better than the fruits at Daily Kos, who would throw a ticker tape parade if Rush Limbaugh got cancer. Of course, they'll say "Ah but you thought of it, that's just as bad," Maybe so, but I have the CLASS not to do it. And so do most if not all Freepers.

I didn't know she had cancer. Much as I dislike her, I hope she makes a recovery.

I pray that truth surrounds Molly Ivins and makes her keenly aware of its presence.

I really hopes she beats this...I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst political enemy.

Get well, Molly. If you don't I won't be able to use your column for toilet paper anymore....(sorry, I couldn't resist.)

I totally disagree with her views on most issues but would not wish the "Big C" upon my worst enemy. I have had two close friends go that way and it is not something to want anyone to have to go thru.
