LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Conservative commentator Ann Coulter, speaking at a traditionally black college, joked that Justice John Paul Stevens should be poisoned.
Coulter had told the Philander Smith College audience Thursday that more conservative justices were needed on the Supreme Court to change the current law on abortion. Stevens is one of the court's most liberal members.
"We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens' creme brulee," Coulter said. "That's just a joke, for you in the media."
Coulter has made a career of writing and lecturing on her strongly conservative views.
At one point during her address, which was part of a lecture series, some audience members booed when she cut off two questioners. "I'm not going to be lectured to," Coulter told one man in a raised voice.
She drew more boos when she said the crack cocaine problem "has pretty much gone away."

Ann, that was really stupid. Statements like this make us sound no better than the lunatic liberals who "joke" about the President being assassinated. What an idiot.
Agree.
you know the rules........
Quite a few of us would probaly agree with her, but I'm not too sure that was the thing to say in front of a college crowd, even though she qualified it as a "joke for you in the press." Why give the MSM free target practice at her?
If it was a joke it wasn't a funny one. It was a very stupid thing to say.
Calling something a joke doesn't make it one. Sorry, bad call on her part.
Not funny except when liberal talk about killing Bush
Are Souter and Breyer that old?
"Ann, do you think it is appropriate to make jokes about assassinating high ranking US Officials?"
Sometimes a joke isn't really a joke. She's been acting wacky since she had that row with NR after 9/11
It's a joke in very poor taste. Then again, maybe I should express my disdain for her remarks with a little joke of my own:
I wish someone would feed Ann; I think the anorexia is affecting her brain.
That's funny, right Ann?
Exactly what I thought. I love Anne but that comment reminded me of the hate the dems are always spewing.
Ann needs to take a deep breath.
This statement is an embarrassment. It embarrasses her and those who support her. If a leftist made such a remark about Alito, she would be all over that.
Ann needlessly alienates more people than she persuades, which is too bad. Red meat to the red states is always fun, but ultimately she would serve everyone including herself better if she would not turn off those who still remain to be persuaded.
Oh well many have said as worse about W, but they were not joking.
ditto
How about bullets flying through Bush '04 re-election offices.
How about the death of Katherine Harris... o, sorry... the near death of Harris?
***silence from conservatives...
Agreed. She must have a book coming out soon that she needs publicity for.
And it really wasn't all that funny, either. Lately she seems to me to be deliberately trying to stir up controversy in a rather ham-handed way. She lost me when she referred to Harriet Miers as "the cleaning lady." Ann Coulter shouldn't have to stoop to this stuff-- her earlier material was sharp, biting, and insightful without this kind of bad taste. Ann Coulter seems to me to be slipping and coming off as rather desperate. Or maybe it's just that every other pundit suffers in comparison with Mark Steyn?
God knows it seems no one has a problem with making fun of Ms. Coulter's appearance. I've seen HUNDREDS of them.
