LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Conservative commentator Ann Coulter, speaking at a traditionally black college, joked that Justice John Paul Stevens should be poisoned.
Coulter had told the Philander Smith College audience Thursday that more conservative justices were needed on the Supreme Court to change the current law on abortion. Stevens is one of the court's most liberal members.
"We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens' creme brulee," Coulter said. "That's just a joke, for you in the media."
Coulter has made a career of writing and lecturing on her strongly conservative views.
At one point during her address, which was part of a lecture series, some audience members booed when she cut off two questioners. "I'm not going to be lectured to," Coulter told one man in a raised voice.
She drew more boos when she said the crack cocaine problem "has pretty much gone away."

"Just because Ann dresses like woman doesn't mean he is one..."
Yeah, I thought that was funny ... but for the record I think she is a gal... I think she is beautiful and I love her...
This is why Ann Coulter is an embarassment to reasonable conservatives. Time to cut her loose.
Amazing how that one just flew right under the radar, isn't it?
Obviously, Ann was disappointed... so she went and said it again.

You are free to appreciate anything you like, and Ms. Coulter is free to make any comments that she likes. What is acceptable to you personally is entirely your concern.
However, every society has standards and mores that define what is acceptable (i.e. proper) behavior within that culture. These rules may be sometimes vague and occasionally irrational, and enforceable only through a general disgust at transgressing individuals, but they are cetainly real. In this case, Ms. Coulter violated one of these societal rules, and is being 'punished' by expressions of disapproval from others.
So it isn't really a question of what is personally inappropriate, but what is inappropriate behavior in our society. Ms. Coulter crossed a line and behaved inppropriately in the larger sense - you are perfectly free to disagree, but you seem to be in a clear minority.
I agree... Bush was playing games...
If you have been fighting for 40+ years for a change in the supreme court you would understand... but if you just now decided to follow politics (just like Miers recently decided to stop giving money to democrats) then you wouldn't understand.
But get over it... she has done more for the Right than you can imagine.
Definitely not a good choice.
I have wished Stevens would drop dead on this forum, but I would never do it in a public speech. That is just asking for trouble....and not only does she hope for that, she even suggests murder (yes, as a joke, but still).
Watch for little if anything said. Of course didn't we fixate on Randi Rhodes and her ill timed comments. But hey she's a liberal.
I think she knew exactly what she was doing, but still, I don't see what this could accomplish.
Oh, Anne.... don't give them ammo!
Excellent analysis.
But, we MUST have a good conservative elected in 2008 or this advantage will mean nothing (assuming Bush doesn't get to pick replacements for the two liberals).
oldest liberals, taht is
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
Unless, of course, you are a RAT.
I certainly wouldn't rule it out. These kind of jokes can get you in all kinds of hot water.
What Ann should have said is that his wife should feed him a lot of lard, butter and eggs--so that he would have a heart attack. (Ms. Donna Brazille, Gore's campaign manager, said that about Justice Clarence Thomas.)
ASMAN: CHRISTMAS MIRACLES ARE A THING OF THE SEASON, DO YOU HAVE A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE YOU WISH FOR?
COULTER: (LAUGHS)... SORRY THE FIRST ONE THAT POPPED TO HEAD I REALIZED WOULD SEND ME STRAIGHT TO HELL SO... (LAUGHS)
ASMAN: (LAUGHS)
COULTER: (LAUGHING) NO I CAN'T WISH FOR THE DEATH OF SUPREME COURT JUSTICES. UHM ...
ASMAN: UH-HUH, UH-HUH...
COULTER: HOW ABOUT JUST THE MIRACLE OF SUPREME COURT JUSTICES AND LIBERALS EVERYWHERE CHANGING THEIR MINDS, NOT WANTING TO ABORT LITTLE BABIES AND WANTING TO DEFEND AMERICA. THAT WOULD BE A MIRACLE.
(BREAK)
ASMAN: FINAL QUESTION FOR ANN COULTER, WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR CHRISTMAS?
COULTER: UHM...
ASMAN: NOT THAT I COULD GET IT FOR YOU.
COULTER: FOUR MORE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES
ASMAN: FOUR MORE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES... WELL YOU MIGHT GET IT. ANN COULTER, GREAT TO SEE YOU THANKS VERY MUCH FOR COMING IN.
