"U.S. agents had been investigating the possibility of an elaborate drug-smuggling tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego for more than a year, but couldn't find it despite using military equipment so advanced it's classified"

"“This tunnel beats them all,” said Michael Unzueta, special agent in charge of the San Diego office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, "

"“People are always going to find a way around us,” he said."

You're doing what liberals do: Using exceptions as a red herring to prevent stopping one or another of their pet evils.

The fence will stop most entries.

Just because a few will tunnel and trickle in, that is no reason not to stop the torrent.

Get real.

"Get real."

Real is actually solving the problem - Cutoff the jobs, cutoff the handouts, deport every illegal.

Punish those who give them a reason to come - put the employers in jail, put the elected officals out on the street.

The fence would greatly slow the tide. You don't get nearly the same about of water through a 1/4" line as you do down the Mississippi.

I hope you are smart enough to understand this analogy.

So you stand there getting soaked with the hose slowly instead of simply turning off the tap ?

Whos to STOP them CANADIANS?..

Most of the 'unguarded' border in this neck of the woods is virtually impenetrable in the winter months, difficult to traverse on foot during the summer, and no Middle Easterner will transit this area without attracting attention to themselves. Road access is limited. That covers from roughly the Idaho/Washington border to Minnesota, where the population is either white or Native American, and tends to be suspicious of people who 'just show up' from elsewhere.

Incidentally, that population is generally well armed, as well. East and west of there, things are different.

WHile I will grant that there is no one single solution to the problem, the question, initially, is what will be the most effective in reducing the problem to a more manageable size--one where other methods can be effective.

Given the option of plugging the holes in the boat or getting another bilge pump, I'd go for the former.

As far as politics go, getting the base back under the pyramid in the Social Security ponzi scheme is a serious consideration, and taxing 'guest workers' to pick up some of that tab may be viewed by some as a partial solution.

Ultimately, though, Congress has to authorize (and allocate funding for) much of what happens at the border, and burying their looting of Social Security funding for pork barrel projects which have bought them votes by tapping the paychecks of 'guest workers' will stave off the financial crisis a little longer, enough for much of the current crop to draw their lucrative retirement benefits, and pass the blame on to their successors.

The poster has acknowledged the fence we have now is working.

Assume, more fence = more effect.

Does the poster want more fence?
Of course not.

In response to a previous reply, no,I hadn't made it that far downthread. Reading which post I responded to (number 64) would have made this obvious.

As for ATM withdrawals of 1,000/day from four accounts (even under different names), don't you think this might trip a flag somewhere in our banking system? Strange transaction histories are investigated, and even three or four people suddenly pulling a grand a day out of ATMs in town would merit another look.

Aside, that is, from the fact that it is a pretty slow way to move large amounts of currency, and it is documented. That gives investigators far too much lead time to do their thing and take the operation down.

There was an American who was travelling in this country by air to a trade show, who had not fully established lines of credit for his business, who was relieved of the $9,000 in cash he was carrying under the presumption it was drug money.

The case made it into the media because the man was on the level, black, and madder than hell that the money he was going to use to purchase stock (as in inventory) had been siezed at a critical moment in the season in a seasonal business.

He was forced to sue for the return of his money, even after he had been cleared. Such are 'drug money' siezures, and far smaller amounts have been taken in some jurisdictions.

I am not sure when you last flew anywhere, but they pretty much want you to empty your pockets, dig through your stuff, etc., any more.

The only viable way, short of elaborate money laundering schemes to move large amounts of cash in a timely fashion, (and without paying the launderers their cut) is to smuggle it.

Simply because your original question is not based in fact

Yet it IS a 'fact'...you stated so yourself in post #157:

Does it surprise you that Arabs would be in that group ?
I would be very surprised if they were NOT.

So since only SOME Arabs are terrorists, that's okay?

---------

An illegal from Bangladesh, ( are we fighting them too ? )

You tell me...a brief search with Google pulls up the fact that Bangladesh is 87% Muslim

---------

and that makes a stream.

So you object to the verbiage ~stream~. What IS your *tolerance level* for terrorists in our country?

---------

So check under your bed, and be thankfull that Pres. Bush is keeping the fight going over there.

Please show me where I *said* the fight SHOULDN'T be going on 'over there'.

---------

In regards to your Sherlock Holmes, here's one for you:

It's better for one to be perceived as a fool, than to open ones mouth and confirm it.

More disigenuous B.S. on your part. The only way to truly "turn off the tap" is thoroughly improve the the widespread economic problems in Mexico. And not just Mexico but most of the economic/political problems in a whole array of diverse coutries (to resolve the heavy border traffic of OTM's as well). That's not going to happen, -at least not in our lifetimes. That is why we need a border fence now.

A fence turns off the tap. What you propose is a slicker suit. It might stop us from getting wet, too, but it won't turn off the water.

[ Then cut off ALL welfare, education and support programs ( maybe do this first ). ]

Superlatives display a lack of rational thought..

The ONLY thing democrat and republican officals agree on almost universally is an open Mexican border.. Mexican massive incursion even trumps the war.. which makes it more important.. Americans ignorant of the wide scope of the Mexican incursions negative effects is NOT random, its on purpose.. Americans generally don't like it.. and that with them not being told the full extent of the problem even.. ON PURPOSE.. Only a nitwit cannot see the negative impact of it all.. Political polarization will TIP to the leftist qualia because of it.. I believe.. its teetering now.. In 2000 fully half the American voting public voted for a known moron(Gore) ON PURPOSE..... Its maybe, the republicans, even on FR, that are in LaLaland...

Nope - I want the problem solved, and it can be done without turning the U.S. into an armed camp, hiding behind walls and barbed wire.

There is no question, we HAVE to address the causes of the illegal situation.

I live in Alaska... people here wait all year for the winter so that in snowmachines they can get out in the bush where its difficult to get to(because of overgrowth) in the other months... the Sand Monkeys are not stupid.. or the drug runners either.... A point to ponder.. same in the desert with ATV's..

We know three things.
1. You acknowledge the fence we have now is "forcing" an effect.
2. You acknowledge more fence will have a proportionate effect.
3. You do not want more fence.

I'm puzzled - you know what needs to be done, yet you refuse to acknowledge it.

Are you a supporter of giving education and welfare benefits to illegals ?

Are you a supporter of those who break our laws by hiring illegals ?

Are you a supporter of giving those illegals who are able to circumvent your protections a free pass to stay here ?

Are you a fenceing contractor ?

Do you like wastefull big government spending projects and are against solutions that would actually save us money ?

You reach a point of diminishing returns - if a 15 ft fence is good would a 16 foot one be better ? How about 20 ?

If 698 miles is good, would not 2000 be better ?

... and you are still not actually solving the problem ...

Good - you've actually started to see the problem.

Tell you what, I'll support you building the Fence, wall, DMZ, land mines whatever as long as you can guarantee that we will toss all those officials over it.

Real is actually solving the problem - Cutoff the jobs, cutoff the handouts, deport every illegal.

When your boat is sinking, it is a good idea to bail, as you say.

But it's also advisable to plug the holes where the water's coming in...
