Akaka won't back Alito filibuster

HONOLULU (AP) _ Hawaii Senator Daniel Akaka says he opposes blocking a vote on Samuel Alito's nomination to serve on the U-S Supreme Court.

Akaka said today he wouldn't support a filibuster because the Senate has heard Alito's positions in confirmation hearings.

Akaka says he would vote against confirming Alito to the court because he has concerns about whether Alito would uphold anti-discrimination laws allowed under the Constitution.

Akaka also says he's worried Alito would work to give the president more power.

I suppose it's just a coincidence that Sen. Akaka happens to be one of the Senators in re-election races this fall...

I do not see how any Senator who has already stated his intention to vote for or against a candidate can vote for the filibuster.

A-kaka is so full of himself.

If he objects to Alito's qualifications and fears for his behavior on the court, he should be prepared to act. A-kaka did swear an oath to defend the Constitution. He should be doing whatever he can to prevent Alito's confirmation.

There. Fixed it.

My family is from Hawaii and my Dad, a lifetime republican, says the race is already looking to be really dirty. Akaka is being challenged by a moderate democrat from the house of reps and all the union backed democrat dinosaur politicians who it would take a nuclear explosion to remove from office in that state have come out publically with the "its not your turn yet" speech. You've never seen more corrupt, union pandering, ol boy network type politicians than you do in Hawaii.

I rank Akaka up there with Patty Murray of Washington state in the completely useless department.

My dad depises him so badly, he says he would actually vote democrat for Akaka's challenger just to help get him out of office.

Akaka is the one who wants to grant Hawaiians status like Indians, so they can legalize gambling, have it heavily regulated by the state, and boost the unions even more.

I could go on for hours about how terrible this man's leadership is, but I don't have the time.

Ed Case, one of only two House Representatives from HI, has made a big news by running against Akaka. Although Akaka probably will still win the seat, Case's running has made Hawaii Democratic Party up side down. Unfortunately, nobody in Republican party can compete with the democratic contenders for US Senate today. Perhaps only the current governor, Linda Lingle, can win. But she'll run for re-election this year.

Compared to other Hawaii delegations, Ed Case is quite 'moderate'.

Akaka introduced Akaka bill, which would give native Hawaiian a special status in the US, a bit like 'nation inside the nation'.

However, together with the other Democratic Senator, Inoue, Akaka voted to open Alaska's ANWR. I think Case opposed it.

These despicable wastes of oxygen are determined to defame this man.

Good for Akaka. He might point out that King Kerry didn't deign to sit in on the debates, unlike many of his fellow Senators. Yet King Kerry has decreed that the hard-working Senators, who courteously listened to their colleagues' speeches, should not get to hold an up-or-down-vote.

Kerry can pretend he's doing important things in Davos, but this is what his platonic friend, Alexandra Polier said about Davos (where she met Kerry almost exactly 5 years ago.)

I met John Kerry for the first time in January 2001, in Davos, Switzerland...

Although it presents itself as a serious policy machine, Davos’s real point is, of course, networking,

Kerry avoids Senate duties
(Afraid he'll catch Democrat cooties?)
He knows he's elected
But instead he's selected
To put on his Swiss-made ski booties.

Dam!
I just went through my Sen Robert C. Byrd Pocket Edition of the U.S. Constitution and can't find any mention of "anti-discrimination laws"?!?

Oh, wait, silly me, I've got it!
He means the ILLEGAL anti-discrimination laws enacted by Congress do to their over stretching the intent of the Commerce Clause which SCOTUS has finally caught on to after +60 years and said to Congress - "STOP IT! Everything doesn't pertain to Interstate Commerce".

Yep, he means those "laws".

"If he objects to Alito's qualifications and fears for his behavior on the court, he should be prepared to act. "

He will. He will vote against Alito.

Filibustering Supreme Court nominees is just a 'not done' thing; except when you are a rabid liberal trying to "Bork" a nominee. Alito deserves an up or down vote, and in their honest moments, Democrats know this.

Whether he is doing it for political cover or not,
Let's not fault Akaka for not following the extremist Democrats down this wrong path.
