Palestinian PM quits after poll
BBC News ^ | January 26, 2006

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei has announced his resignation, saying Hamas must form the next government following the parliamentary elections. It comes as the militant Islamic group appeared to be heading for a shock win.

With counting still under way, officials from the ruling Fatah party said Hamas had won a majority. Official results are due at 1900 local time.

Israel, the US and the EU consider Hamas a terrorist group and have said they do not want to deal with it.

"I am going to present my resignation to President Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] and Hamas should form the [new] government," Mr Qurei told journalists, according to AFP news agency.

Hours before official results were due to be released, Fatah officials conceded that Hamas had won the elections.

Hamas claimed it had won at least 70 seats in the 132-member parliament.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Jerusalem says a victory for Hamas would present a huge challenge for Israel and the international community and for Hamas itself.

He says many believe the militant movement would be more comfortable as the major opposition party rather than having power thrust on it at the first attempt.

To quote a past US leader, "We start bombing in five minutes."

With Israel giving up land for quote " peace " quote (sic), instead of peace, it gives these subhuman terrorists more power.

Just stunned. Wondering what is going through Tony Blair's and GW's mind at this moment. Wonder how hot the phone lines are between Israel and Washington?

This is no longer just ME drama. Hamas in charge of the PA, with AQ in welcome residence, and Iran's gesticulations...all three avowed to the genocide.

We all thought maybe the WOT is WWIII, but now the alliances are forming stronger bonds of state. The face of terrorism is putting on the mantel of statehood. We are moving from a battle in the shadows into a battle in the light. And while this may scare the living daylights out of me, it may be just what the US needs to have happen. The enemy attached to a political state. I say acknowledge Palastine as a state and the first bombing by its soldiers or undercover operatives is an act of war. And remember the Palastinians made their choice.

May God save the innocents.

And that is a good thing. It is better to fight evil in the open than evil hiding behind a "good" face.

The piece that needs to fall in place is the acknowledgement of a Palastinian State.

Let Israel howl about it, but it will force the islamic crusade from a 'police' matter to 'acts of war.' It will change the whole makeup of the situation. Undercover terrorist cells will become spies etc. It would set the whole matter on its head.

Someone tell me again how the Palestinian people don't support terror, that it's just a few bad apples that ruin the image of the Palestinians as a peaceloving people.

I thought that was the Air America motto...?

Precisely. The only thing that has changed is our ability to deny that the Palestinian Authority is a terrorist organization.

States are much easier to make war on than cowards hiding in their midst.

People with states have more to lose as well.

If Palestinians want to elect terrorist then any pretense of innocents of its people is gone and they can be held directly accountable.

The Palestinans, as usual, are their own worst enemy.

Great...

How long do you think it will take before Carter trots over and extends his olive branch to the new terrorist regime?

He's already there, monitoring the election results, wearing a bullet-proof vest.

McClelland might take exception to that.

Exactly, from now on there is no such a thing as "innoccent palestinians who oppose terror". Next time Israel do what needs to be done, the liberals will completely lose any excuse to condemn Israel.
