L.A. Mayor to Give Response to Bush Speech (in Spanish)

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will give the Spanish-language response to President Bush's State of the Union address on Tuesday, Democratic congressional leaders announced.

Villaraigosa has been seen as a rising Democratic star since his election in May as the first Hispanic in 133 years to lead Los Angeles, the country's second-largest city. He will deliver his remarks from his Los Angeles office, said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

"Mayor Villaraigosa is working hard to increase economic opportunity and provide affordable and quality education for the people of Los Angeles," Reid and Pelosi said in a joint statement Wednesday. "As the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles in more than a century, we are proud to have his diverse voice within the party."

The Democrats' English-language response is being given by newly elected Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine.

Hispanics are the nation's largest minority group and a critical voting bloc that typically leans Democratic.

In the last presidential election, exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and television networks found Bush winning 44 percent of the Hispanic vote, up from 35 percent in 2000. Democratic Sen. John Kerry won 53 percent, down from 62 percent four years earlier for Democrat Al Gore.

Mayor Villaraigosa is working hard to increase economic opportunity

Tell 'em all to learn English. That would help.

How in Hell does local government increase economic opportunity and provide affordable and quality education for the people of Los Angeles County without raising taxes year after year?

He giving the speech in Spanish? That's nuts. English is the mother tongue of America. Period.

The Balkanization of the US continues. Que lastima.

Antonio Villaraigosa, former president of the UCLA chapter of MEChA.

MEChA is an acronym for "Movimiento Estudiantíl Chicano de Aztlán" - Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan. The goal of Aztlan is the secession of the Southwest U.S.A., which it calls Aztlan. The MEChA Constitution clearly calls for "the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlán". Another key document , "El Plan de Aztlan", states that "Aztlan belongs to those who plant the seeds, water the fields, and gather the crops and not to the foreign Europeans. We do not recognize capricious frontiers on the bronze continent....We declare the independence of our mestizo nation...Nationalism as the key to organization transcends all religious, political, class, and economic factions or boundaries. Nationalism is the common denominator that all members of La Raza agree upon." The MEChA slogan "Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada" (Everything for the Race - Nothing oustside the Race) -what is that if not racism? According to Miguel Perez , mechista of Cal State Northridge, "The ultimate ideology is the liberation of Aztlan....Non-Chicanos would have to be expelled....opposition groups would have to be quashed because you have to keep the power." "National revolution" was the theme for the 1997 MEChA conference, which called for becoming " a nation within a nation with a national plan of action as new soldiers in our struggle for national independence and an emerging XICANO nation." Simply judging from its own documents and statements, MEChA is a racist, anti-American separatist hate group, and actually shares much in common with such groups as Aryan Nations, and the White Aryan Resistance, another California-based organization.

Will he also deliver his speech in Polish? There's a large voting block of poles in the US too. What about Italian? Or how about German, French, or Russian? Maybe he can even deliver it in Chinese and Japanese? I hear there are many immigrants in the US who came from those countries too. Oh yea I forgot, all these immigrants were decent enough to bother to learn the language.

Let me take a stab at what Antonio Villaraisetaxes' speech might entail, in my "on-again, off-again" Spanish:

"Buenos noches.

(Now, I may have some of the words wrong; I am English by nature, a black conservative Republican from the hood, and my Spanish training was 20 years ago. But this is the best I could do off the cuff. I'll post the translation at 11:00am).

Antonio Villaraigosa, former president of the UCLA chapter of MEChA.

So, the English response will be in opposition to Jorge...the Hispandering response will cheer him on?

I'm confused...why would the Illegal cheerleaders oppose their biggest supporter?

Maybe, but it is more interesting that the dem's have to go all the way down to a city mayor's office, the lowest in the political food chain to find someone to speak against the President of the United States.

Tells you a lot about those dem's at the federal level looking to run in 06 and 08.
