LAKE CHARLES, La. A steady procession of congressmen and U.S. senators have visited the Gulf Coast this month, inspecting Hurricane Katrina damage. But they didn't show up here, one of the places devastated by Hurricane Rita, Louisiana's "other" storm.
Four months after Rita caused $4.7 billion in damage, people in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas say they're concerned the storm has been erased from the country's memory, overshadowed by Katrina's assault on New Orleans. While New Orleanians fret about "Katrina fatigue," people here say they've been victims of "Rita amnesia."
"We don't want anyone to lose sight of the things that have happened to coastal Louisiana because of Rita," said Randy Roach, the mayor of Lake Charles.
Rita hit Sept. 24, one month after Katrina, along the Texas-Louisiana line. Its 120 mph winds and 9-foot storm surge flattened the Louisiana coastal towns of Holly Beach and Cameron, and caused extensive damage further inland, in Lake Charles and Port Arthur, Texas. About 100 died in Texas, including 23 elderly people whose bus exploded during an evacuation.
Like Katrina, Rita was a Category 3 storm that received a lot of attention at the time. Amid fears of Katrina-like chaos, the media zoomed in on the massive traffic jams as people in Houston and southwest Louisiana evacuated northward as the storm approached.

Hey Nagin...what flavor are your neighbors? All American blend is my guess.
Or Ivan, or Dennis, or Francis, or Jean, or any other hurricane amnesia...........
The difference is the Texans are not whining. We are just rebuilding.
Or Agnes in '72. However did we manage?

For those who are not familiar with Louisiana's coastal region, Cameron Parish's population is ZERO. Everyone in Cameron parish lost their homes. They aren't heard because they are too busy rebuilding on their own.
Off topic question, if I may......caught a blurb on Fox that Blanco had set an election day..I did a search and didn't get anything.....any idea whassup?
Whine, sob, wail - they didn't come to Miami after Wilma, either. New Orleans, Nagin, Blanco and the race-baiters all need to get over themselves.
Hurricanes happen; property is damaged and destroyed; services, jobs, utilities and lives are disrupted. It's part of life.
Deal with it.

Okay, you sold yourselves to left wing candidates who mismanaged everything and you continue to support them.
You made your own bed, now middle America's fault?
Speaking of "amnesia" whatever happened to all the devastation in Mississippi and Alabama?
SE Texas, Lake Charles and Cameron Parish are far from left wing democrats. The leaders here have done a phenomenal job before, during and after the storm. When you go and gas up or light your heater thank the hard working people of this area for doing everything in their power to get the refineries back online so you wouldn't have to pay $5 a gallon and have heating fuel in spite of losing everything they owned.
Cameron Parish people are tough. They just want the government to get out of their way so they can rebuild and move on.
"Like Katrina, Rita was a Category 3 Category 5 storm that received a lot of attention at the time."
The entire time we were doing preps for the strike, Rita was a Cat 5, thankyouverymuch.
