Looking down the judiciary committee vote tallies last night I wasn't surprised to see that all the dems voted against him. There's not an ounce of honor among them. It's all about power.

I'd bet money that they understand that poll numbers etc are cyclical. I'd guess that they took the beating without resonding much until they got in a window that they think will have them strong during the 06 election cycle.
