PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Actor George Clooney's off-color joke at the Golden Globes about Jack Abramoff's name reduced the disgraced lobbyist's 12-year-old daughter to tears.
That's according to Abramoff's father, Frank Abramoff, who scolded the actor in an open letter on Palm Spring's Desert Sun newspaper Web site.
Clooney won a Best Supporting Actor Globe for "Syriana," a multilayered political thriller about corruption in the global oil industry. During his speech, he poked fun at Abramoff's first name, and part of his last name -- which drew laughter from the crowd.
The lobbyist's father wrote on the Desert Sun's site that he was astonished by the actor's "glib and ridiculous attack" during last Monday's televised program.
He wrote that the 12-year-old girl was in "a fit of tears" after hearing Clooney's remarks.
"Your words were deeply hurtful to many innocent and decent people," Frank Abramoff wrote in the paper. "One day the truth about my son will come out and there will be a lot of people in your industry and others lined up to apologize for their efforts to destroy him and our family."
Clooney did not respond to Frank Abramoff's letter, but his father, broadcaster Nick Clooney, did.
Nick Clooney told the The Desert Sun he understood Abramoff's father's anger, saying that he knew what it was like to have a child criticized in a "very public way" and that it is "very painful and it's difficult."
However, Nick Clooney added, "The difference here, and it must be said, is Mr. Abramoff's son, instead of pursuing some positive efforts to do what he hoped would change the climate of the American politics, has confessed and has been convicted by that confession of subverting the political process."
Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty earlier this month to federal charges of conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud.
In a statement after the guilty plea, Abramoff's lawyer said that his client will work with federal investigators and others "to fully resolve all matters of interest" and make amends. Federal prosecutors are examining whether several Capitol Hill lawmakers received favors from Abramoff or his clients.
Dems are not only short on ideas, they are obviously short on manners.
George Clooney, Jack Abramoff

Couldn't happen to a better ma (no I can't say man, how about) it couldn't happen to a better fool!!!!
Oh the humanity. I am shocked and dismayed that George Clooney could be so boorish. </ sarc>
George is only good at playing himself in movies...
He seems to selectively forget that Abramhoff gave money to Dems too.
Nitwit.
More proof that actors should stick to acting.
"Sometimes class skips a generation."
Don't count on it, Mr. Abramoff. The people in that industry don't have the cojones to admit when they are wrong.
George Clooney, same guy that cost Kerry the election right? Wow some powerful dude.

Oh, wait... they didn't.
It's heartbreaking to think that this is the family that gave us the late Rosemary Clooney, but I believe she was a Kennedyite herself.

Bet he had an orgasm in that role. It probably wouldn't be as good as an expose of the "American military-indutrial complex" in this cretin's mind, but powerful enough nevertheless.
boo hoo. Cry me a river...
They all need to grow skins. "I don't get it." Would have been my response to Clooney.
Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty earlier this month to federal charges of conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud.
It appears that the truth has already come out. Abramoff was responsible for his own actions as well as the shame he brought upon his family.
He's fair game.
"The apples don't fall far from the tree, do they?"
Yep, that Georgie boy is a chip of the old man's block. Their both left wing idiots not deserving of air time.
