Joe Lieberman: U.S. Prepared for Iran Strike
Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday that the U.S. is prepared to deal with the Iranian nuclear crisis militarily - even if the war in Iraq continues to require a substantial American troop commitment.
"We have the most powerful military in the history of the world," Lieberman told CBS's "Face the Nation."
"We are capable, if necessary, of continuing to pursue our aims militarily in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere and, if necessary, conduct a military attack on Iran."
Lieberman said the he hoped an attack on Iran, if it should come, would be carried out "with the assistance of our coalition allies in Europe."
But he noted that any assault on Iranian nuclear facilities "would be primarily an air attack. It's not going to involve massive use of ground forces."
Asked about reports that the U.S. would let Israel take the lead in any attack against Iran, the Connecticut Democrat told CBS:
"The United States is a strong enough country that we never want to be in a position to have to essentially contract out protection of our national security, vis-a-vis Iran, to another country like Israel."
He noted also the Israelis "don't have the same aircraft capacity that we do, capable of doing it."
Lieberman said that while the military option remains a last resort for the U.S., "I want the people who lead Iran to understand that it is on the table. We deem their pursuit of nuclear weapons to be dead serious."
Exactly. Without air superiority, exposing ground troops in an invasion on our forces in Iraq would be folly.
Thats where the F-22, B-2, and F-117 come in. As well as HARM missiles and land-attack cruise missiles.
The dropping of the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren't "warning" shots, they were "finishing" shots. They immediately put an end to the war in the Pacific.
The only warning you could say came from that was a warning against the Soviet Union, whom we did not fully trust as "allies." But if that's the case, it clearly did not work.
Good. Then any "ring of children" or other civilians left at the targets would, in effect, be murdered by their own government.
I'd bet a dollar to a dime that OBL is sitting with his children in Iran. And OBL and Ahmadejihad know that we know it, and they know that they have nukes, and they know it's getting close to their turn.
I'll assume that is a joke. But if they want to make it easy for us let it be.
Right now, they need a strong signal, not annhilation..We need the Iranian people to overthrow the regime and mullahs..
Thank you Jimmah
Getting bogged down in the UN was perhaps our biggest pre-Iraq mistake. Resolution 1441 gave us full authority to invade (like all the 12 resolutions before it did). We already had the authority: there was no need to ask the UN's permission. If they wouldn't help (as they didn't), then they were only failing to enforce their own treaties.
For this reason, advance notice should be announced and the exact target coordinates provided.
NEVER MESS WITH AMERICA!
So, an ICBM hit American soil in Alaska and we hear about it from a Korean source? Hmmm.
What if Japan hadn't surrendered? We gave them two times at the brass ring (2 warnings) or they would have had nukes on Tokyo.
Maybe old Senator Joe will pull a Jeffords and become a republican. It sure would be a slap in the face to libs everywhere. He owes the democratic party zilch, nada, nothing. they are a bunch of bafoons...............
EXACTLY!
If everyone has been given prior warning, then any "innocent civilians" that die are no longer our responsibility.
Exactly. It just proved that the UN is a waste of time. Even FRANCE helped to sign 1441 (although they cowered because of their invlvement with oil dealings with Saddam and the oil for palaces program). This time around we should just outright ignore the UN. What I would really like to see is a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran.
I agree woleheartedly! Besides it would make a nice additional footage to Trinity and Beyond (I ust love that DVD) hehe.
But we didn't have any more bombs. That would have been a bluff.
I just can't grasp nuking two cities and incinerating hundreds of thousands of people in an instant as a "warning." I see it as a full-scale extreme act of war designed to make the enemy surrender unconditionally. It worked.
It took us this long to begin finishing this war because of 1)the enemy within America and 2)we played nation building in Iraq instead of utter devastation. Yes, Iran (and Syria by the by) has been the target in between Afghanistan and Iraq all along. Very obvious both in the Axis of Evil context and in the subsequent operations.
