When the city of Las Vegas offered New Orleans help in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, Crescent City Mayor Ray Nagin asked Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman to do something for his weary emergency workers.
The response was first-rate. Local casinos offered rooms and show tickets and Vegas-based Allegiant Air offered flights to the weary firefighters, police officers and medics.
At least that's who they thought was coming for the R&R.
The majority of seats on the first flight to Vegas, however, were filled by Nagin's aides, janitors and people who don't work for New Orleans at all.

Latest column: "On Judge Alito, the San Francisco Chronicle is Unfit to be a Newspaper"
I didn't even realize there WERE any trips to LV. I thought that was just a convenient excuse for why the non-existent policemen were not on the scene. We should remember that this all occurred while the emergency was still raging. It was unbelievable that Noggin was even thinking of vacations at a time when people were still trapped in their homes.
typical Chocolate City operation
Good column--I always got laughs out of the SF Comical when I lived there--
"But in some cases, the City That Care Forgot hoped that what happened in Las Vegas just stayed here."
New Orleans, the City That FORGOT to Care
"New Orleans, the City That FORGOT to Care"
Very good, about time somebody came up with that. You get a gold star!
It's not just the physical city of New Orleans that's sinking...
Typical Rat tricks.
The majority of workers in the NO Office of Emergency Preparedness are actually volunteers who have all sorts of jobs - many within city government and many also from the private sector. It shouldn't surprise anyone if a city janitor went on the trip if he or she was activated as an OEP officer and was on duty during Katrina.
That is sickening.
Something of value for free....if that doesn't draw every low-rent from New Orleans out, nothing will!! I call them Nagin's Neanderthals, and if the shoe fits, steal it! This whole episode shows the level of "citizenship" folks in NO have, and that ain't much to brag about either. I'll bet the Mayor of Las Vegas feels like he's been had, and you know what? He was.

Thank you very much but the real credit goes to Nagin and Co, jokes about them virtuely write themselves.
The Oompas!
