The arrests could begin to close the book on one of Colorados enduring mysteries.
At the time, the Vail firebombing was considered the costliest act of eco-terrorism in the country, causing $12 million in damage, destroying the Two Elk Lodge, a mountaintop restaurant, among other structures.
"The indictment tells a story of four-and-a-half years of arson, vandalism, violence and destruction claimed to have been executed on behalf of the Animal Liberation Front or Earth Liberation Front, extremist movements known to support acts of domestic terrorism," Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said at a news conference today.
Appearing with Gonzales, FBI Director Robert Mueller declared, "Terrorism is terrorism, no matter what the motive."
"There is a clear difference between constitutionally protected advocacy ... and violent criminal activity," Mueller said.
Todays indictment lists five people, including Gerlach, as participating in the Vail arson.
The others: Josephine Sunshine Overaker, Kevin Tubbs and Stanislas Gregory Meyeroff.
A fifth person, William C. Rodgers, deceased, is listed as an unindicted co-conspirator.
"I can tell you, these people are thugs," said former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, who often railed against so-called "eco-terrorism" when he chaired the House of Representatives' Forests subcommittee.
"The image I'm sure they'll try to present as their defense is that they were Robin Hood saving society from a ski area building a lodge," McInnis said.
"And as a result of their actions, of course, the ski area did build their log lodge, but with twice as many logs as they would have in the first place."

I wish for them many years as boy toys in prison.

Why does eco-terrorism have scare quotes in one part of the article but not in the other?
"And as a result of their actions, of course, the ski area did build their log lodge, but with twice as many logs as they would have in the first place."
LOL! I hope these scum rot in jail.
These eco terrorist thugs are getting whacked all over.
It is amazing how many people in N California are defending the scumbags. One of the latest bilge outpours from the left is "This is what happens when we allow Bush to tap the phone calls of concerned activist citizens!"
Hopefully, the judge will cut them off at the knees.
