Coalition vows to defeat harsh immigration bill [HR 4437]
Reuters ^ | 1/19/06 | Alan Elsner

A U.S. coalition of business, labor unions and religious groups launched a campaign on Thursday to defeat a bill backed by Republicans that would turn some 11 million illegal immigrants into felons. [NOTE: I believe that was downgraded to a misdemeanor.]

The coalition of 24 organizations, many of which rarely agree on politics or economics, denounced the bill passed by the House of Representatives last month [HR 4437] and called on the Senate to enact legislation to include a guest worker program and a path for illegal aliens to gain legal status.

... "We are extremely disappointed with the proposal that passed the House last month," said Thomas Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce which represents some 3 million businesses...

... Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, which has 1.8 million members, called for comprehensive reform to take control of the border and provided a way for illegal aliens to gain legal status...

... Other groups joining the coalition include associations representing builders and contractors, health care providers, the hotel and restaurant industries, Latino organizations, farm workers, the American Jewish Committee and Catholic bishops...

How about the 40 million plus unborn children killed since Roe v. Wade - that's not just slightly more important?

What about them? They are gone. Reversing Roe v. Wade won't bring them back. Yet, the illegals are still here breaking laws and stealing U.S. sovereignty day by day. You want them to be pardoned or granted amnesty. This is what you advocate?

A proud American would stand up for his sovereignty not give it away to a third-world horde.

"WHAT? Are you an aider or abettor of these criminals?"
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>............
my bet is your are right on..too many of our religious "do gooders" think charity begins with letting the third world live here - when it must begin with the third world changing the corrupt ways that keep it poor-too many of the so called "do gooders" are willing to let their neighbors suffer for the so called "good work they do"..
if they are called to help the poor of the world let them go to them- not bring them to us . The US is a life boat with a limited capacity once that capacity is overcome we will all be in the sea and no one will be saved..

Any 'path to legal status' for illegal aliens that includes a path to citizenship (w/o first going home and getting in the normal, legal line) is amnesty.

Why does McCain insist on making it so hard to support him? I mean, I don't expect him to tow the party line on everything (as I don't), but everytime I ponder whether or not I could support McCain in a POTUS bid I just remember his co-sponsorship, with Ted Kennedy of all people, of a massive amnesty bill and the answer is 'no.' I mean, TED KENNEDY! That tells you all you need to know. Is McCain so naive to think that despicable creature would sponsor anything other than something he's sure would be a political winner (in terms of new voters, not public reaction)?

Theres part of me that would almost like to see McCain get the nomination just to see the worst of the GOP shills here defend him to the death even though they all claim to hate him now.

This socialist UN scum filled government of ours had better start listening to the common citizen ie taxpayer/voter or there just may be violence.

The American people are getting awful tired of being ignored by these lying legislators whose Oath of Office says they will support the Constitution, not piss on it.

Am I making a threat? No, just stating the facts and wishing I could be a part of it.

Having a President and a Senate who is more concerned with illegal alien rights than protecting our borders isn't why they were elected!

I went back over its posts and replies and it screams for the USA to help these criminals. I think they just want to turn America into the same hellhole they came from.

Interesting. You know that advocating violent overthrow of the government is illegal too, right?

OK, have I missed something here? I don't see where he's "advocating violent overthrow of the government." Are you saying that it's against the Constitution to advocate overthrowing the government in a violent manner?

"but all the democrats voted against it because they wanted to kill the whole bill."

Actually is wasn't all the democrats but it was a few/enough to insure passage of the Republican bill.

Apparently the dems are trying to assist the republicans as they commit political suicide. Just like California.

Noticed the Anti-American Reuters just had to use the term "harsh" in the headline.

The correct figure is probably between 40 to 50 million. There are probably 10 million in Texas and another 10 million in California.

These people have a lot of babies. in 50 years we will probably have to change the language to Spanish.

What are you talking about. Republicans will pass a bill like this and then they will pass a generous guest worker program. Border security and a guest worker program. Seems like everything you claim to support. If hispanics wont vote republican unless we have a virtually open border with mexico and other countries to our south then let them vote democrat. They would even if the GOP gave them everything they want anyway. The fantasy that hispanics are just dying to vote republican any second is just that, fantasy.

These organizations form a criminal cabal whose function is to reconstitute American society along the lines of an internationalist western socialist state.

I can understand the commercial interests - they are interested in slave labor they exploit.

But the religious groups backing this are beyond outrage. They take our tithes, contributions, etc and employ them to undermine our society.

Its a dynamic situation, we will just have to let it play out.

But there are scenarios in which the dems could use the far right republican agenda on immigration reform to lock up the hispanic vote just like they did the black vote.

Most of them voted against it (191 to 8). In combination with those 17 or so RINO Republicans who felt the same way about the bill as the democrats and some who preferred to keep it a felony it was enough to sink the attempt by Sensenbrenner to strike the provision. It doesn't matter because it will never make it in the final version just like any scam guest worker/amnesty attempt won't.

God forbid that illegal activity be punished in the new, compassionate America that this administration is bringing us. A better idea would be to toss all the xenophobic border vigilantes into prison. < end channelling bayourod >

I think there are more important national issues than turning some 11 million illegal immigrants into felons too.

Absolutely- a better idea would be to hand out driver's licenses to them, and education and medical care to their families. You've sold me, clarence. You're a genius.
