Dame Edna gets own stamp

SATIRIST Barry Humphries and his alter ego Dame Edna Everage have joined the ranks of Aussies to be featured on an Australian postage stamp.

Mr Humphries' face, along with that of the glamorous Moonee Ponds housewife, will appear on the 2006 Australian Legend stamp, in recognition of their contribution to Aussie culture and entertainment.

"For more than 50 years, he (Barry Humphries) has helped shape our nation's identity, culture and importantly sense of humour with hilarious character creations," said Australia Post managing director Graeme John.

"Dame Edna's signature catchcry "Hello Possums!" has also become a typically Australian greeting that's recognised from Moonee Ponds to Marylebone."

Barry Humphries is the 10th recipient of the Australia Post Legends Award, and Dame Edna is the first alter ego to be given the honour since it was introduced in 1997.

Other Australians whose faces have graced postage stamps include Arthur Boyd, Slim Dusty, Dawn Fraser and Dame Joan Sutherland.

I, for one, refuse to lick the back side of a Dame Edna stamp.

Something about that dude that really creeps me out... I don't see any humor at all.

I agree, I think Humphries is pretty funny.

And, just for the record, he's straight.

Although very funny, Dame Edna holds narry a candle when compared to Eddy Izzard, the other cross-dressing comedian from across a pond!

Cheers,

Never heard of Eddy Izzard but I can't believe he could be funnier than Dame Edna - or, in particular, Sir Les Patterson..are you with me? No worries!

I like Dame Edna. Is there not another character that guy does? Less famous though, at least in America.

He does a number of characters. Apart from Dame Edna, his most famous is undoubtedly Sir Leslie Colin Patterson, Cultural Attache, diplomat and statesman ("I used to sit on the Australian Cheese Board, but I kept getting those little flags stuck up my arse!")

Sir Les is a throwback to the left-wing, internationalist, arty-farty types who ran this country in the early '70s. Permanently drunk, spewing profanity, he is hysterical.

I haven't missed a Barry Humphries live stage show in 25 years, and would beg, borrow or steal to get to the next one!

And I think you're spomge worthy too!

Barry Humphries

Never did know "her" real name.

And now that I see it, I just have to ask:

Any relation to a certain Mr. Humphries, who worked in Grace Brother's Men's Department, under Captain Peacock? Bwaaaahahahaha!

When you can, would you post a picture of the stamps? Thanks.

Thanks; I already tried that.

I'll try the Aussie Post Office's site, assuming they have one.

We ALWAYS get a kick out of watching Dame Edna, and would love to see a live show. Just never in the right5 place at the right time. I envy you.
