SANTA ANA As local law enforcement appealed to Latino leaders Wednesday to help with controversial plans to enforce immigration laws, one Hispanic activist threatened protests in Costa Mesa if the proposals are approved.
Nativo Lopez said if the plans are enacted he will ask Latinos to refuse to cooperate with Costa Mesa police through a campaign of "non-confidence and silence," will launch a boycott of businesses within the city, and will hold a mass march and rally there on President's Day weekend.
Lopez was among several people, including Sheriff Mike Carona and Costa Mesa Police Chief John Hensley, who spoke at a discussion organized by the Orange County Community Forum, an organization of faith, ethnic and grass-roots groups.
Police sweeps are nothing new, Lopez said, but now police and politicians are using fears brought on by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to justify a public policy that they say will help cut crime.
"The fallacy of these arguments about crime and security is that they have been tried before, but previously the anti-immigrant crowd did not have the Twin Towers as their big fig leaf," Lopez said.
Carona and Hensley didn't react to Lopez's threat during the forum. Both asked Latino leaders for help in educating the community on their plans, which they said have been mischaracterized as racial profiling and sweeps aimed at undocumented immigrants.

The cost estimates for an Israel-style wall or Duncan Hunter's double fence at 15' is less than $3 Billion to build from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean.
Building that barrier then frees up border patrol personnel to concentrate on interior enforcement. That means no new net cost for an activity that up until a year ago wasn't happening. Did you know that until last year, ICE only had one agent assigned to the duty of rounding up illegals in North Carolina? And before you go telling me that NC isn't a border state...they have one of the higher concentrations of illegal aliens in the country after the four border states and Illinois.
The illegal alien is a problem of enormous proportions, whether you want to admit it or not. Accepting it as a fait accompli at this point is weak-willed and ill-advised...it's just plain wrong.
let's make one thing clear here - we're not tearing any family apart - the illegal behavior of the parents is. If they had immigrated legally, or stayed in their beloved Mexico and made a life for themselves there, this problem would not exist.
We disagree then, as I am an optimist as to how great America can be.
See, that "Anchor-baby" provision is because of a deliberate misinterperetation of the law as written.
Illegals that are Illegally in the US are not under US Law, as they are not here legally. Therefore any children they have are not US Citizens.
But even if that still continues, my answer is so frickin what?!
Send the parents back...let the kid either go with them, or be adopted here...but the ILLEGALS must go!
No exceptions!
Too harsh? Tough. The parents never should have been here to put the kid in that situation!
Why not? When a guy robs a bank, we throw him in jail even though it separates him from his children. Illegal alien parents choose to invade our borders illegally. Nobody holds a gun to their heads. Every time they hire a smuggler, overstay a visa, or sneak past a border patrol agent, they know they are breaking our laws. When they go ahead and drop an anchor baby after they're here, they are (or should be) taking their chances that they and their kid will be booted back to their country of origin.
It's unfortunate, but children have always to suffer when their parents commit a crime. Maybe the invaders wouldn't be so quick to have anchor babies if they really thought they were in danger of being deported. They've gotten brazen and arrogant because they don't think we will enforce our laws.
I think so too, but the key word is "IF". IMO Loretta, via illegal alien voting, stole that district from B1 Bob Dornan, and it could happen again... :^(
Costa Mesa, home of Calvary Chapel
It is also "just plain wrong" to assume the cost of one wall is the only cost in completely sealing the border. What about the net impact to our economy, for instance? If all of those costs could total more than $9 billion, would you then agree that said solution was worse than the problem.
So, that means "no" to a rational debate then? No one indivisual is going to write a check to cover EITHER side of the equation.
Did Janet Reno tear apart Elian's (extended) family, or not? I think she did - I was against that too, and I suspect most Freepers were - well, I think my government should not be tearing apart other families even if one or both parents are illegal immigrants. There has to be another solution - did you see my compromise above?
If those were the only choices, then I guess I would have to go with adoption - that's sad though you can be so harsh.
well ya know I lived in the district at the time of the Dornan/Sanchez election and man was it a fiasco! LOL
Anything is possible but I believe if the GOP got behind a conservative(which the GOP didn't when Dornan ran against Sanchez) that he/she would be elected.
I lived in Costa Mesa for 20 years and all I have to say is "good luck with that." Sorry, they aren't going to get anyone to boycott South Coast Plaza or MiCasa restaurant either.
I find it ironic how some of these illegal immigrants try to escape Mexico "because of the corruption" in their country. Yet it is here too, to meet and greet them.
But in this case, corruption is in the eye of the US taxpayer.
These people can't afford to shop there. LOL!
I agree that it is unfortunate that children have to suffer when their parents commit a crime - if the punishment for being here illegally was simply jail, then your analogy would work - since we don't deport any bank robbers for that crime, however, I think we need to discuss an appropriate remedy.
"debate?"
you want to allow criminals to stay here and allow Californians to continue to pay NINE BILLION A YEAR while they do and I don't!
what's to debate?
since the NINE BILLION A YEAR is being paid by millions of Californians and those same Californians want the immigration laws enforced, the borders secured and illegals deported and until YOU start paying the NINE BILLION A YEAR you don't have a leg to stand on!
Point, Game, Set, Match!
No, she sent the kid back with his Dad, which is where he belonged. Furthermore, Mexico is not Cuba.
The costs of illegal immigration are not simply $$$ signs. It's much more complicated that that and it is not even quantifiable. I can't put a price on the Mexicanization of the United States, with all that entails. For an illustration of what I'm talking about, see Mexico itself, and ask yourself if you want the US to gradually turn into that country. If so, save the rest of us the agony and just go to Mexico now.
