SANTA ANA As local law enforcement appealed to Latino leaders Wednesday to help with controversial plans to enforce immigration laws, one Hispanic activist threatened protests in Costa Mesa if the proposals are approved.
Nativo Lopez said if the plans are enacted he will ask Latinos to refuse to cooperate with Costa Mesa police through a campaign of "non-confidence and silence," will launch a boycott of businesses within the city, and will hold a mass march and rally there on President's Day weekend.
Lopez was among several people, including Sheriff Mike Carona and Costa Mesa Police Chief John Hensley, who spoke at a discussion organized by the Orange County Community Forum, an organization of faith, ethnic and grass-roots groups.
Police sweeps are nothing new, Lopez said, but now police and politicians are using fears brought on by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to justify a public policy that they say will help cut crime.
"The fallacy of these arguments about crime and security is that they have been tried before, but previously the anti-immigrant crowd did not have the Twin Towers as their big fig leaf," Lopez said.
Carona and Hensley didn't react to Lopez's threat during the forum. Both asked Latino leaders for help in educating the community on their plans, which they said have been mischaracterized as racial profiling and sweeps aimed at undocumented immigrants.

So, you think the President should visit businesses that only donated to Gore and Kerry - perhaps like Costco?! If there's nothing illegal about the $1.5 million in campaign contributions, I'm not quite sure what your complaint is here.
Well, your gloves may be off, but it's going to be a bit difficult to round up AMERICAN CITIZENS as illegal immigrants.
"parts of once-American Orange County are turning into Tijuana north."
don't throw in the towel just yet! LOL
the folks in OC are reeeeely getting fed up with the way things are NOT getting done around here.
and if the GOP could find a true blue conservative to run against Sanchez in Santa Ana; I believe we could even turn that district mess around! I know the Vietnamese-Americans and the Hispanic-Americans both pro-life constituencies would vote for such a candidate. The Hispanic-Americans are the most outraged about the illegals because the illegals are taking away their jobs, cluttering up their neighborhoods and lowering the wage scales!!!
Well then you won't mind paying the NINE BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR that it is costing CA alone to allow illegals to stay here.
and I won't even get into the THIRD OF THE PRISON POPULATION who just so happen to be illegals or the lack of hospitals that have closed because they couldn't afford to give the illegals FREE MEDICAL CARE!
I could go on and on but you appear to be totally ignorant of the facts and I reeeeely don't have the time nor the inclination to spend educating you. Do your own research.
And don't give me this "recession" BS.
Californians were picking fruits and vegetables, cleaning toilets, washing dishes, scrubbing floors and cutting grass long before illegals showed up.
The illegals need to GET IN LINE just like my grandparents did!
You obviously don't understand the 'issue' as we do...one of National Security, Crime, Bankrupt Health Care System, Bankrupt School System, Environmental Disaster, etc.
I get the impression by your comment regarding multiple solutions that you think we're looking at only a narrow slice of the problem. You'd be thinking rather incorrectly, my FRiend.
Do a keyword search on 'aliens', read the articles, and then think about what they mean. I'm talking about military incursions, MS-13, cop-killers, OTMs from terrorist-sponsoring nations, closed hospitals, border communities whose school populations are at least half illegal, and scores of dead peons whose lives mean nothing more than the crossing fee to the coyotes they trust.
Then you may begin to get it. Until then...well...you don't.
What language are you using?
I said round up all the ILLEGALS....the only "Citizens" that need to be rounded up are the ones that aid and abet ILLEGAL INFILTRATORS....and the political scum that sell us out daily.
See, it's OBL-speak to automatically grant American Citizenship to ILLEGAL INFILTRATORS!
They are here ILLEGALLY, so the go the "F'n Kerry" home!
Which word are you unable to comprehend?
The self-anointed "Hispanic leadership" somehow thinks there was some love affair between US citizens and illegal immigrants prior to 9/11.
Is there any business in Costa Mesa we can patronize on the internet?
"controversial plans to enforce immigration laws"
The beginning of the end, when upholding the law becomes
" controversial".
AMEN!!
"Is there any business in Costa Mesa we can patronize on the internet?"
I'm sure there are...
Ace is the place for your friendly hardware store....LOL
A former fellow Marine works at the one I patronize!
not to forget every woman's heaven...SOUTH COAST PLAZA! LOL
Don't know if they deliver, but Taco Mesa is definitely worth a look if you're ever in the neighborhood. Best blackened chicken tacos in the world.
Deport all criminal invaders ~ Bump!
maybe they could set it up like one of those impromptu markets on the streets of Mexico City, just to make the Mexicans feel at home - then they can watch the whites flee with their $$$ to Fashion Island
All criminal invaders ~ Boom ~ Bump!
Z O T
em high!
I don't mind "NINE BILLION DOLLARS", especially if it would cost more to round 'em up, deport, and completely seal the border. Unfortunately, lesser events have indeed caused recessions, but just because no one knows the total costs and benefits, I will not claim you are "totally ignorant of the facts" - now, do you want a calm, rational debate, or not?
I speak English (although I do speak fluent Spanish as well) and comprehend every word you posted. What you are not comprehending is the fact that children of illegals born in the U.S. are American CITIZENS and that we should not be tearing apart such families. As for "OBL-speak" I don't think I've ever heard of the United States Constitution, 14th Amendment specifically, referred to as "OBL-speak" - next argument?
You can purchase South Coast Plaza "gift certificates" but I'm not about "online".
Given the level of immigrant poverty in this country, despite the subsidies of the taxpayers, I'd say there isn't enough for everyone. And there certainly isn't enough for the 40 million poor in Mexico who are yet to come.
