Childlessness A Sin, Southern Baptist Leader Says

Rev. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, says it's "an absolute revolt against God's design" if husbands and wives purposely avoid bearing children.

On his Web site and other articles and interviews, Mohler argues that "marriage, sex and children are part of one package" and that "to deny any part of this wholeness is to reject God's intention in creation and his mandate revealed in the Bible."

In a CNN interview, the Baptist leader added, “We grow up by having children. Without that responsibility, we have a generation of perpetual adolescents just growing old."

The so-called reverend Mohler wasn't ordained by God, he was ordained by the Southern Baptist Church.

But the good reverend would probably not see it this way - after all, fewer babies born to Baptists equals fewer parishioners and less money, doesn't it.

That sounded a bit bitter. I've been around over 40 years, I've seen very few people raised by absolute well and whole people and yet they manage to overcome a childhood raised by imperfect parents.

I have raise 3 wonderful kids even tho I went thru divorces and fathers that weren't available in one way or another, poverty and my own mistakes and shortcomings. My children have never said 'I wish I'd never been born'. They see where they want to do better raising their children by their parents failures. That's the circle of life if you will.

I do not understand your conflict over this issue if you are not married. The Bible says that marriage is not for everyone. If you are happy single, then I can only guess that this is God's will for your life, at least at this point.

Thanks for your posts. I hope to meet you someday and share some Christian fellowship with you. I was taught (and thoroughly believe) that every Christian has the duty to search Scripture to see if what their pastor/priest is saying conforms to the Word of God. We are charged with loving God with all our hearts, minds, souls and strenghts. I hope that love will win out in this discussion.

One of the most interesting threads I've read in a long time; thank you for posting it. What do I have to say about it? Jesus said something to the effect, "Judge not lest ye be judged; for with the same measure you judge shall it be measured back to you..."

This is not an injunction against judging but a caution that the 'harshness' of our judgement may come back on us. I think I have just enough empathy to feel a great deal of pain in some of the responses I've read and I do not wish to add to that pain. I am Christian and I do believe in judgement and forgiveness and I believe that those of us who've asked for forgiveness (and who've accepted and acknowledged the Lordship of the 'Nazarene') may find not only that their sins have been forgiven, they may also find their injuries healed and their pain removed. I am also Baptist but I do not interpret those scriptures I've read here today as Reverend Mohler does and I don't think that necessarily means I'm wrong because I disagree with him. That only makes me a Baptist.

It is so true that most of the time children turn our great in spite of their parents. I was 18 when our first child was born. I tell them I don't know how that you ever survived your parents.

They are all college educated, responsible adults that never gave us a minute's trouble. They are raising a lot of great children themselves, from age 5 to 21.

I would thoroughly enjoy the opportunity. When I was young I almost became a minister, but I found I couldn't abide by the rules of man that govern the denomination. Since then I've sought my own salvation, in fear and trembling, but have had the pleasure to share portions of that path with many fine people...from many Christian faiths.
