Democrats abort deal on Alito vote
The Washington Times ^ | January 17, 2006 | Charles Hurt

Senate Democrats have scrapped a "good-faith" agreement they made two months ago to allow the Judiciary Committee to vote today on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr.

"This is a new low in our confirmation process," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican. "Not only because it is virtually unprecedented, but also because it reflects a breach of trust."

According to Judiciary Committee rules, either party can stall a nomination in committee for only one week, meaning that Judge Alito's nomination will likely be approved by the panel during an executive committee meeting next Tuesday.

The entire Senate will take up the nomination no later than Jan. 25 and will remain on it until Judge Alito's nomination is voted up or down, said Eric Ueland, chief of staff for Majority Leader Bill Frist.

"Justice delayed will not be a justice denied, as Sam Alito will receive a fair up-or-down vote and join the Supreme Court before month's end," he said. "Any remaining threats to filibuster are just filibluster."

Although Democratic leaders have not ruled out an attempt to filibuster the nomination, such a maneuver seems increasingly unlikely.

Democrats have progressively lost most state governorships, most state legislatures, the House, the Senate, and the Presidency.

Hopefully, the governorship in Illinois will go back republican this time around, I can't see Blago being re-elected!

~sigh~

Another day, another dim lies. Cornyn, Frist, Specter, Hatch all knew this was going to happen. They have some catchy soundbites for the media, though.

You beat me to it. That was exactly what I was thinking and it is why I am so weary of trying to be a supporter of the Republicans.

What a friggin' surprise!

Honestly, does anyone, besides Clueless Arlen expect the Rats to ever honor an agreement?

In Demospeak, "trust me" means "F you".

You know, it would be funny to page Daschle over a loudspeaker for all the Senators to hear... and then have Thune scheduled to talk up front right after that.

That's why they call themselves "progressives".

This is bad news. What they have done is give their moneyed allies a week and a half to mount a media campaign against Alito. If it's well done and massive, we could be in trouble.

I wonder whether the Republicans will finally learn that, no matter how many pleasantries they have with them, no matter how many enjoyable dinner parties or drinks at the bar, no matter how many apparently pleasant social or work encounters, they are still dealing with liars and cheats.

If Specter loses the nomination because of this, he is going to look and feel like an a**.

Ah, let them keep it up.

They pay the price.

Let's see, 5 out of the 7 last Presidential elections have resulted in a Republican as the President, Majority in the House, Majority in the Senate, what is about to be two conservative Supreme Court justices in a row...they pay a price.

Cornyn, you're nuts

The Senate is a debating society as well as a political body. When your opposition breaks agreements it's imperative your side point it out in the most explicit terms possible in order to reach those among the electorate residing within the lowest-common-denominator stratum.

Cornyn's one of the good guys. He isn't surprised and is here merely engaging in good political maneuvering. Why take him to task?

When your opponent is untrustworthy, even if it's expected, point it out in the press for crying out loud!

This tactic means there is a chance that the parental notification law or end of life case will be decided by then.
I still would think not but the extra week means there is a greater chancde O'Conner's vote might be the difference in those cases.

Roberts and the entire Court surely have an eye on the confirmation. Keep in mind that O'Connor's opinions that justify stare decisis do so in large part to maintain public confidence in the Court's decisions and methodology. I have a feeling that 5-4 decisions will be held up at this point in time rather than issued.

The Court has to know that issuing a 5-4 decision now will be politically volatile, no matter which way the case turns, and would validate delaying tactics.

Whether the Court considers any of that is pure speculation on my part - but I think the projected ramifications of issuing a close decision are real.

That's no excuse...I am a former New Yorker and managed to escape with the help of the 'underground railroad' in '76 and moved to freedom in SC.

As long as you are taxpayer in NY, you keep the socialist in power.

I gotta believe that somebody outside the Senate is telling them what to do on this one. This action means that everybody in the Senate gets a weeks less vacation time next time 'round. Senators don't care about much, but you start screwing around with the vacation time, and you get their attention.

My best guess is that somebody with the power to do so picked up the phone and told the Senate Democrats to place all procedural roadblocks possible in the way of the Alito nomination. The only person with the power to do that is Soros. Soros has purchased the Democrat Party lock, stock and barrel, and is now calling the shots.

I wonder what rank-and-file Democrats think about the fact that the Moonbat Left has taken over their party. When will they look up and realize that the Republicans are a heck of a lot closer to where they want to be than Code Pink and George Soros.
